Martha Kyrillidou Bio

Share Share   Print

Martha Kyrillidou, currently Senior Director of ARL Statistics and Service Quality Programs, has been responsible for all aspects of the Statistics and Assessment capability since 1994. She pioneered the development of the StatsQUAL gateway, offering assessment products and services to the library community ranging from descriptive statistics to evaluative tools focusing on service quality improvements. Martha provides analytical expertise to libraries addressing both strategic and policy issues, and has widely disseminated assessment developments through numerous publications.

Martha is responsible for identifying tools for measuring the organizational performance and effectiveness of libraries; represents ARL's Statistics and Assessment program to professional and higher education associations, federal agencies, foundations, the press, member libraries, and the library community in general; administers the policy, technical, and production aspects, including data collection, analysis, and publication of the statistical electronic and print-based products; and coordinates collaborative activities. Martha monitors developments in statistics and measurement programs in other agencies as they relate to libraries and higher education. She co-chairs (with Steve Hiller and Jim Self) the biennial Library Assessment Conference and is an advocate for "effective, sustainable, and practical assessment" strategies.

From 2000 through 2003, Martha was co-principal investigator (along with Colleen Cook, Fred Heath, and Duane Webster) on a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) to measure service effectiveness in academic research libraries. From 2002 through 2005, Martha was a co-investigator (along with Colleen Cook, Fred Heath, Yvonna Lincoln, Bruce Thompson, and Duane Webster) on a collaborative grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to assess service quality in digital libraries. These assessment tools as well as the ARL Statistics (with Kendon Stubbs, 1994-98), ARL Annual Salary Survey (with Gordon Fretwell, 1994-95), MINES for Libraries (with Brinley Franklin and Terry Plum), and ClimateQUAL (with Charles Lowry, Sue Baughman, and the University of Maryland team) are available through the StatsQUAL gateway supported by ARL. Martha and Raynna Bowlby offer training in effectively incorporating assessment results within the organization. In collaboration with Carol Tenopir and Paula Kaufman, Martha is currently working on a three-year IMLS grant (Lib-Value, 2010-2012) researching articulation and measurement of library value and return-on-investment (ROI) for academic libraries.

Prior to her affiliation with ARL, Martha worked in the Library Research Center at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Bureau of Research at the School of Education at Kent State University. In these positions, she gained expertise in psychological testing, program evaluation, marketing research, questionnaire design, statistical analysis, report writing, and presentation of results.

Martha holds a BA in English from Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece (1987); an MLS and an MEd with specialization in evaluation and measurement from Kent State University (1990); and a PhD in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2009).

In 2007 she received Kent State's School of Library and Information Science Alumni of the Year Award; in 1988-89 a Fulbright Scholarship. Martha and her husband raise their two kids in Silver Spring, Maryland.
