Notes:
We are trying to create content that responds to usersí needs. We have found that our audience does not care whether we are traditionally a publisher of one type of content--books, journals, databases, reference, etc--but instead wants us to create digital resources that cut across all of these categories and provide all of the information that they need in one place.
The collaboration between the various partners involves guidance from scholars concerning the identification of the most useful content, advice from librarians concerning organization, license arrangements, and pricing models, the technology systems for making the content searchable and secure, and the rights and royalty arrangements for use of the material. By working within the already-existing infrastructure of Columbiaís libraries, computing center, press, and faculty, we are able to create a stable yet innovative organization on a modest budget with decreased direct costs.
Systems for gathering usage statistics and development of evaluation systems for the material is being built into the project from the start through an evaluation program. Our goal is to understand the effects of these resources on teaching, learning, research, and university on the largest scale.
Finally, we are interested in creating a new kind of organization that includes groups that have not traditionally worked together. How do these groups share job responsibilities that were previously separate, , how does one manage this new kind of organization?
