Notes:
Earthscape attempts to bring together a collection of content that is not typically published in one place. Instead, we are aggregating all of this material in one spot based on the needs identified by scholars for their research and teaching).
The site gathers educational modules for use in classes in various topics in the field of earth systems, research reports that represent the work of scholars at a pre-publication stage, links to the data underlying their research and teaching, and An online-only magazine designed to reach a more general readership of policymakers, undergraduates, and the general public interested in environmental policy, conservation biodiversity, etc.
This information trail ignores traditional lines that divide publications into books, journals, newspapers, and reference sources, and instead treats the user as a learner or researcher who wants to find everything useful about a subject in one place. When we held a series of focus groups with faculty in earth systems science, this is the resource that they described as what they needed, and our challenge was to create something that filled these needs and went beyond what they imagined being possible at the time. One interesting question is how this model may change research and teaching in this field.
