Notes:
In thinking about the elements needed to develop the sort of innovation and models I have been discussing, it becomes clear that for the most part, they all exist within the university itself, provided that we rethink the ways in which the different parts of the institution interact.
In addition, certain elements must be in place to create an environment for innovation, including an interested and responsive faculty, and leaders within the various parts of the university that can play a critical role in creation of new models for scholarly communication, and who see the larger vision.
I believe it is possible for faculty, in collaboration with their academic computing organizations, libraries, and their universities, to play a formative role in moving forward, and that it is ultimately the resources that are created in response to their needs and direction that will transform the landscape of scholarly communication.
