SPEC Kit 301 explores the current roles of liaisons in ARL libraries, any changes in focus in their interactions with academic departments, whether liaisons are being reactive to faculty and student needs, partners in providing teaching/library instruction, and pioneers in the new electronic world or have limited involvement with the academic departments. It documents how libraries mix the activities of traditional liaison responsibilities with the new trends that are fostered by the evolving needs of today’s library patrons. It includes documentation from respondents in the form of descriptions of liaison roles, responsibilities, and services offered, job descriptions, and training materials for liaisons.

This paper discusses informal scholarly communication in the humanities; ways in which information technology can influence the content of scholarly communication without necessarily changing its outward forms; and an emerging genre of scholarly communication in the humanities, one that is native to the Web, and raises some interesting challenges for the disciplines. Dr. Guédon made a presentation on these ideas in May 2001 at ARL's 138th Membership Meeting, a meeting held in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Research Libraries in Toronto. The presentation was received very positively and, Dr. Guédon agreed to write a paper to encourage further discussion. The result is the paper in hand. In Oldenburg’s Long Shadow is published by ARL with permission of the author in order to stimulate further discussion and new thinking on the important issues that he raises.
