Law Serials Pricing and Mergers: A Portfolio Approach

Using data from more than 400 legal serials, Mark McCabe estimates the impact of six publisher mergers on law serial prices during the period 1990–2000. The results suggest that merger-related price increases were substantial during this period, even after accounting for secular price trends.

Information Access Alliance Will Continue to Push for Revised Analysis of Cinven and Candover Purchase of BertelsmannSpringer

The Information Access Alliance (IAA), a group of seven library organizations, will continue to push for revised analysis of publisher mergers despite the recent announcement that the Department of Justice has approved the sale of BertelsmannSpringer to Cinven and Candover. The Alliance is concerned that mergers of this sort will bring about a reduction in access to critical research information due to the heightened journal costs that result.

Information Access Alliance Releases White Paper and Launches Website

The Information Access Alliance, a coalition of six leading library organizations in North America, has published a white paper that examines the impact of mergers among scholarly and legal publishers and calls for a new standard of antitrust review of merger transactions in this industry by antitrust enforcement agencies.

Information Access Alliance Letter to Commission of European Communities Regarding Cinven and Candover Purchase of BertelsmannSpringer

Bertelsmann AG recently announced its intent to sell BertelsmannSpringer, a publisher of scientific, technical, and medical (STM) journals, to Cinven and Candover, a partnership of UK-based private equity firms. We are writing to you on behalf of the Information Access Alliance, a coalition of six leading library organizations in North America that serve institutions engaged in research, education, law, and health care. We are deeply concerned that this development in the global STM market will lead to a further reduction in access to critical research information worldwide. We urge the European Commission, as we have urged the U.S. Department of Justice, to challenge the proposed sale.

Publisher Mergers: A Consumer-Based Approach to Antitrust Analysis

In this paper, the Information Access Alliance (Alliance) describes the issues that have emerged as the industry has become increasingly concentrated and advocates for a new standard of antitrust review that we urge be adopted by state and federal antitrust enforcement agencies in examining merger transactions in the serials publishing industry.
