SPEC Kit 342: Next-Gen Learning Spaces (September 2014)

This SPEC Kit explores the configuration and uses of learning spaces in ARL libraries, the developments and transformations that have occurred over the past 10 years, and future plans for learning spaces to determine where they are on a continuum between first-generation information commons and “next-gen” spaces. The publication covers five main areas related to learning spaces:
  • What kinds of learning spaces currently exist
  • How these spaces have changed since their inception
  • Effects these spaces have had on other library operations
  • Instruction, programming, and collaboration that take place in the learning spaces
  • Current assessment methods for learning spaces and changes that have been made or are planned based on the results of these evaluations

This SPEC Kit includes examples of learning spaces and instruction spaces; floor plans and maps; marketing for spaces, programs, and instruction; space-use policies and procedures; job descriptions and organization charts; and planning and assessment documents.This publication is available for purchase in both print and online versions.

ARL Library Assessment Forum Highlights Value of Library Spaces—Slides Online

u-tennessee-knoxville-info-commonsimage © University of TennesseeOn January 24, 2014, at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, the ARL Statistics and Assessment program hosted an engaging Library Assessment Forum. Bob Fox, dean of libraries at the University of Louisville and chair of the ARL Statistics and Assessment Committee, discussed issues related to facilities data–collection activities. Teresa Walker, associate professor and head of learning, research, and engagement at the University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries, presented on the information commons assessment conducted at UT through the LibValue grant. Danuta Nitecki, dean of libraries and professor of information science at Drexel University, shared insights about utilizing ROI and observational data.  Steve Hiller, director of assessment and planning at the University of Washington Libraries and co-chair of the Library Assessment Conference 2014, presented the latest updates on the upcoming conference to take place in Seattle, Washington, August 4–6, 2014.

 
 

Print Retention Decision Making, SPEC Kit 337, Published by ARL

SPEC Kit 337 coverPrint Retention Decision MakingARL has released Print Retention Decision Making, SPEC Kit 337, which examines research libraries’ print retention decision making strategies related to storage of materials in three different types of facilities or circumstances: on-site, staff-only shelving; remote shelving; and collaborative retention agreements. The survey also examined the decision making and practices surrounding the deaccessioning of library material. For each retention or deaccession strategy, the survey explored the on-going or project-based nature of the work, the involvement of stakeholders, the selection process and criteria for materials to be retained or deaccessioned, the communication strategy with internal and external audiences, and the responses from the libraries’ internal and external audiences to these endeavors.

 
 

New Roles for New Times: Research Library Services for Graduate Students

The report proposes that the growing number, and heterogeneity, of graduate students and programs presents opportunities for research libraries to provide segmented services targeted for students at different stages of their academic and demographic life-cycle.

Through their interviews, Covert-Vail and Collard found an enthusiasm for a broad range of new services, from advanced data manipulation and visualization to softer skills-based instruction in time management and writer’s block. They also report that new configurations of library space, housing aggregated services into research or scholarly commons, for example, can both create and leverage collaborations within the larger institution.

Finally, the authors present different strategies for staffing graduate student services, from dedicated positions and committees to more loosely structured teams comprising subject liaisons, technologists, data librarians, and others, who work together to deliver a suite of complex solutions to meet the needs of graduate students in research institutions.

SPEC Kit 337: Print Retention Decision Making (October 2013)
