Career Enhancement Program Call for Applications: Deadline October 15

Career Enhancement Program fellows 2013, photo by Molly MageeARL is now accepting applications for the ARL Career Enhancement Program for 2014. Master of library and information science (MLIS) students from racial and ethnic minority groups, who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or will complete 12 hours by the scheduled internship) in an American Library Association (ALA)–accredited program, are encouraged to apply for this enriching experience. The Career Enhancement Program, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ARL member libraries, provides each fellow a rewarding compensation package with a potential value in excess of $10,000 per person.

 
 

New Roles for New Times: ARL Publishes Report on Transforming Liaison Roles in Research Libraries

U Minnesota health sciences librarian Jonathan Koffel with medical facultyARL today released Transforming Liaison Roles in Research Libraries, the third report in the New Roles for New Times series. This series highlights the transformation of the library workforce to address new challenges for research libraries in serving 21st-century students, educators, schools, and researchers.

The new report, written by Janice M. Jaguszewski from University of Minnesota Libraries and Karen Williams from University of Arizona Libraries, presents findings from interviews and other research into current trends in liaison librarianship, surfacing several challenges to the established, overarching liaison structure.

ARL-SAA Digital Archives Specialist Courses in Albuquerque: Early-Bird Deadline Approaching

You do not need to work at an ARL library to register for the courses at this site—they are open to all librarians and archivists.

This report analyzes salary data for all professional staff working in the 126 ARL member libraries during 2011-2012. Data are reported for 9,910 professional staff in the 115 university libraries and for 4,046 professional staff in the 11 non-university libraries.

SPEC Kit 331: Changing Role of Senior Administrators (October 2012)

SPEC Kit 331 focuses on the professional, administrative, and management positions that report directly to the library director (or in some ARL member libraries the position that serves as the representative to the association), positions that have not been examined by a SPEC survey since 1984. It explores the responsibilities of these positions, and the skills, qualifications, and competencies necessary for these administrators to successfully lead a transforming 21st century research library. It looks at whether and how position requirements have changed in the past five years, whether the number of direct reports has changed, whether these administrators have assumed new areas of organizational responsibility, and how they acquire the new skills to fulfill those responsibilities. It includes documents that compare organization charts and position descriptions from 2007 and 2012.
