The New Digital Landscape of Government Information: Implications for Research Libraries

Although providing access to scholarly literature is a core mission, US and Canadian research libraries have historically also played a key role in ensuring the survival of critical primary documentation produced outside of academia. The advent of big data and digital technologies are fundamentally altering the life cycle of such documentation, calling for a "new system of action" to ensure the long-term integrity of important societal evidence. This session will explore the challenges these developments present in the field of government information, in light of the recent controversial losses and unauthorized disclosures of US government records.

Session I—Innovative Approaches: Services, Programs, and the Organization

What are innovative approaches to using scholarly resources and library expertise to support campus initiatives? How is a culture of innovation created in an organization? What is the long-term impact for the library, for the institution? The speakers will discuss their approaches to innovation and how to tap into existing staff talent for creative ideas and solutions.

Session II—Fundraising & Development

This one-hour program is a brief look into three components of development: administrative placement of the library’s development efforts; importance of collaboration between communication and development officers; and the opportunities and challenges of annual giving, campaigns, and gift planning. The panelists will also share their reflections on the role of the library director in development.

Accessible Technology and Content at Large-Scale: Opportunities for High-Impact Collaboration

Building on the strategies developed by the ARL Accessibility and Universal Design Working Group including the launch of the Web Accessibility Toolkit, this program will address three new and ongoing efforts to help libraries fulfill their mission to enhance information access to all of their users. Presentations will be given on the opportunities for services in the wake of the HathiTrust decision, the benefits and advantages of institutional self-assessment and accessibility plans, and the use of the OCUL Scholar's Portal repository for digitized texts to serve patrons with print disabilities in Ontario. Paul Jaeger will moderate, setting the stage for how libraries can engage in greater collaborative accessibility work by understanding their changing user populations.

ARL Membership Refines Strategic Thinking and Design at Spring 2014 Meeting

Almost all of the program sessions at this meeting focused on the current ARL strategic thinking and design process, upon which the Association embarked in the fall of 2013 to define its role in higher education and to maximize ARL’s ability to be agile and responsive to changing priorities and member needs. The meeting also included a panel discussion of SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem), a higher education and research community initiative to ensure the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs.

Several program sessions dedicated to discussion of ARL’s strategic thinking and design work are in development. The meeting will adjourn on Thursday, May 8, at noon.
