Until this 1998 survey, no systematic data had been collected on special collections in ARL libraries for nearly 20 years. The results of this survey provide a snapshot of these collections at the end of the twentieth century and identify areas for further investigation.

This survey was a joint initiative between SCONUL and ARL that focused on assessment activities in UK and Irish academic institutions, and reflects a SCONUL desire to provide tools, techniques, and data for performance measurement and improvement through its Working Group on Performance Improvement. The survey was distributed to the 180 members of SCONUL in September 2008. Seventy-seven libraries completed the survey. All of the libraries that responded indicated that they engaged in various performance measurement activities beyond the annual collection of data for SCONUL.

This report responds to a recommendation of the 2006 ARL Task Force on the Future of Preservation in ARL Libraries. The task force encouraged ARL to conduct a high-level investigation of the range and balance of preservation activities represented among the ARL membership. The report is a thoughtful and thorough qualitative examination of how research libraries' preservation activities are evolving and expanding in the 21st century. It not only consideres activities traditionally captured by ARL’s Preservation Statistics, but also a host of emerging activities largely, but not exclusively, centered on developing digital collections and involving collaborative efforts.

This volume includes papers from the June 2005, Library Assessment Conference, co-sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Alexander Technological Educational Institution of Thessaloniki Library, and partially funded by the European Community Social Fund. Participants were informed about the development and use of LibQUAL+® and MINES, as well as about the current effort to adapt LibQUAL+® into the digital library environment (DigiQUAL™). They also engaged to identify ways to use evaluation data for managing change and improving services in a Greek library environment.
