SPEC Kit 343: Library Support for Faculty?Researcher Publishing (October 2014)

By actively participating in the research and writing process, librarians can use their subject expertise to develop new roles for themselves and devise new modes of contributing to the scholarly communication cycle. This SPEC Kit explores ARL member libraries’ activities related to support of faculty and researcher publishing of scholarly works. It investigates the level and variety of services ARL libraries are providing to support, facilitate, and participate in the publishing activities of the faculty and researchers they serve, whether through the re-framing of existing traditional library services or the development of new services.

This SPEC Kit includes examples of publishing services offered by libraries, events that showcase faculty research and promote authors, author’s rights information, library support for repository deposits and public access policy compliance, author addenda, open access policies, and job descriptions.

Introduction to ClimateQUAL® Lite

ARL’s Shaneka Morris and University of Maryland professor Paul Hanges present a half-hour web seminar on ClimateQUAL Lite, a shorter form of the conventional ClimateQUAL® survey that preserves data integrity while allowing institutions to assess library staff perceptions of the most essential aspects of the library's climate for diversity.

Workforce Transformation: Communities of Practice as Tools for Organizational Change and Self-directed Professional Development

Last year, ARL’s New Role for New Times report, Transforming Liaison Roles in Research Libraries (PDF), by Janice M. Jaguszewski and Karen Williams, identified six trends in the organization and practices of leading research libraries and the changing work of liaison librarians. One of those trends is the effort by research libraries to “create and sustain a flexible workforce.” Building a flexible workforce includes a variety of methods to “transform” a library’s workforce, including hiring new staff with new expertise, as well as committing to develop a more agile “legacy workforce.” (p. 14)

SPEC Kit 342: Next-Gen Learning Spaces (September 2014)

This SPEC Kit explores the configuration and uses of learning spaces in ARL libraries, the developments and transformations that have occurred over the past 10 years, and future plans for learning spaces to determine where they are on a continuum between first-generation information commons and “next-gen” spaces. The publication covers five main areas related to learning spaces:
  • What kinds of learning spaces currently exist
  • How these spaces have changed since their inception
  • Effects these spaces have had on other library operations
  • Instruction, programming, and collaboration that take place in the learning spaces
  • Current assessment methods for learning spaces and changes that have been made or are planned based on the results of these evaluations

This SPEC Kit includes examples of digital project selection criteria, outreach and assessment guides, assessment reports, marketing plans, lesson plans, job descriptions, and works created with material from digital collections.

Library Investment Index Summarizes Relative Size of ARL University Libraries for 2012–13

library-investment-index-2012-13-screenshotARL has released the Library Investment Index for 2012–2013, the latest in this annual summary measure of the relative size of the university library members of the Association. Although similar to the ARL Membership Criteria Index in reflecting the investments made in research libraries, the ARL Library Investment Index is less affected by the electronic availability of content and, consequently, the rapidly changing context of library collections. Neither index attempts to measure a library’s services, quality of collections, or success in meeting the needs of users. The ARL Library Investment Index has been calculated beginning with data from 2002–2003.

 
 

Workforce Transformation: Possible Library Futures

I have held a series of administrative positions at Oklahoma State University (OSU) since 1978 and have been dean of libraries since 2004. During that time we have experienced a number of changes and in 2012 the OSU Library looked to be thriving. We had adopted technology to enhance collections and improve services. We had been a development partner with Summon and were in a similar role with Intota. We consistently received positive survey results and comments for our services and collections. Our building was heavily used by students. For most of my staff and many of my librarians, the library looked healthy and robust. We were clearly not stagnant, but I had a strong sense that many librarians had not yet acknowledged how precarious our future was in research libraries. Staff members who did not have opportunities to attend professional meetings or the time to read the professional literature were unaware of the danger we were in. They did not fully comprehend how the transformations in technology, scholarly communication, and higher education would change their work, nor did they recognize how the competitive challenges from Google and others could make our traditional services irrelevant.

This SPEC Kit explores research libraries’ policies and practices on open sourcing their code, the frequency with which research libraries contribute to open source projects, whether research libraries are reluctant to make their code openly available, and the most common benefits and challenges encountered when research libraries open source their code.

ClimateQUAL®: Organizational Climate and Diversity Assessment—Call for Participation 2014–2015

The online survey collects information about: (a) library staff perceptions of the organization’s commitment to the principles of diversity, (b) staff perceptions of organizational policies and procedures, and (c) staff attitudes. LibQUAL+ is a suite of services that libraries use to solicit, track, understand, and act upon users’ opinions of service quality. The program’s centerpiece is a rigorously tested web survey paired with training that helps libraries assess and improve library services, change organizational culture, and market the library.

 
   

Call for Proposals for SPEC Survey Topics 2015—Deadline July 18, 2014

SPEC logoSPECARL is seeking proposals for 2015 SPEC survey topics. For 40 years ARL has gathered and disseminated data through the SPEC survey program to assist libraries in the continuous improvement of their management systems. Each year, ARL works with librarians in the US and Canada to develop surveys of the ARL membership on strategic topics related to research library policies and practices. (Survey authors do not need to work at an ARL member library, but only ARL libraries are surveyed.)

Edge Initiative for Public Library Technology Assessment Launches

As of January 22, 2014, interested public libraries may sign up via the Edge website.

Participating libraries will use Edge to complete an assessment of their public access technology services. Edge provides additional tools and training for libraries to make improvements and better serve their communities.

 
 

U Montréal Cancels Subscriptions to 76% of Serials in Wiley Online Library

u-montreal-pavillon-roger-gaudryimage © Université de MontréalOn January 14, 2014, the Université de Montréal (UdeM) libraries announced that they are cancelling their subscriptions to 1,142 of 1,510 periodicals in the Wiley Online Library at the end of the month. New issues of the cancelled titles will no longer be available online to the UdeM community, but access to earlier issues will be maintained. In a news release (English translation [PDF]), the libraries note that the cancellations are the result of several factors, including budget cuts imposed by the Québec government and annual subscription price increases between 3% and 6%.

This SPEC Kit examines what outward-facing commitments libraries have made to innovation and R&D, and what foundations are in place to support these activities. The SPEC survey asked who is involved in innovative activities; how libraries organize themselves to create, support, and sustain innovation; and how they measure the resulting outcomes. The survey also collected data on which research libraries support R&D, at what level, for what purposes, and how these activities are organized, funded, and assessed.

The ARL Leadership Fellows program, designed and sponsored by ARL member libraries, helps develop future executive-level leaders of large research libraries and archives.

The institute—hosted by Connie Vinita Dowell, dean of libraries at Vanderbilt, and facilitated by Elliott Shore and Mark A. Puente of ARL—featured a full week of sessions with such leaders as Richard McCarty, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Vanderbilt; John Lutz, vice chancellor for information technology at Vanderbilt; Beth Fortune, vice chancellor for public affairs at Vanderbilt; and Charles Henry, president of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR).

 
 

Analyzing Age and Race/Ethnicity Demographics webcast

This webcast, recorded November 5, 2013, focuses on the enormous staffing changes occurring in research libraries, in terms of both demographics and demand for skills. The presenters are Mark Puente, director of diversity and leadership programs at the Association of Research Libraries, and Stanley Wilder, university librarian at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
