ARL/SAA Mosaic Program Hosts Inaugural Leadership Forum at SAA Annual Meeting

mosaic-fellows-with-david-ferrieroARL/SAA Mosaic Program fellows with David Ferriero, photo by Sarah McGheeThe 2013–2015 ARL/Society of American Archivists (SAA) Mosaic Program fellows participated in the first Mosaic Leadership Forum on August 12, 2014, during the SAA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The daylong forum focused on such topics as leadership in the archives profession and increasing diversity within the field. The event also included a practical session on job interview techniques and strategies for transitioning into the professional archives workforce. The importance of building a supportive career network and community by utilizing the opportunities available in SAA was a common theme developed throughout the day. A highlight of the forum was a special appearance by David Ferriero, the Archivist of the United States.

 
 

Workforce Transformation: Possible Library Futures

I have held a series of administrative positions at Oklahoma State University (OSU) since 1978 and have been dean of libraries since 2004. During that time we have experienced a number of changes and in 2012 the OSU Library looked to be thriving. We had adopted technology to enhance collections and improve services. We had been a development partner with Summon and were in a similar role with Intota. We consistently received positive survey results and comments for our services and collections. Our building was heavily used by students. For most of my staff and many of my librarians, the library looked healthy and robust. We were clearly not stagnant, but I had a strong sense that many librarians had not yet acknowledged how precarious our future was in research libraries. Staff members who did not have opportunities to attend professional meetings or the time to read the professional literature were unaware of the danger we were in. They did not fully comprehend how the transformations in technology, scholarly communication, and higher education would change their work, nor did they recognize how the competitive challenges from Google and others could make our traditional services irrelevant.

ARL Leadership and Career Development Program 2013–2014 Celebrates Closing Ceremonies

The closing ceremonies and poster session for the 2013–2014 cohort of the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program (LCDP) were held in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 28, 2014, during the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. This marks the completion of the eighth iteration of the LCDP since its inception in 1997. The closing ceremonies included formal remarks from ARL president Carol Diedrichs, as well as reflections from 2013–2014 fellow Joel Thornton of the Texas A&M University Libraries. The poster session highlighted research projects conducted by the fellows during their 18-month fellowship. The event was attended by numerous ARL member library directors, LCDP alumni, and special guests.

 
 

U Toronto Libraries Host ARL Leadership Fellows for Strategic Issues Institute

The University of Toronto Libraries and their chief librarian, Larry Alford, hosted the 2013–2015 cohort of 26 ARL Leadership Fellows for a Strategic Issues Institute on July 13–18, 2014. The Toronto institute included an array of rich programs, presentations, tours, and networking events, as well as opportunities for the fellows to meet numerous University of Toronto administrators and library staff. A recurring theme of the institute was collaboration, including external partnerships with the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) as well as on-campus collaborations.

 
 

Library Assessment Conference 2014 Travel Award Recipients Selected

These grants are offered to students and early-career professionals from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who have demonstrated a strong interest in assessment and have the potential to contribute to the profession by deploying and developing innovative assessment and evaluation methods and strategies. The awards cover attendance, travel, and meals at the Library Assessment Conference, which will be held at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, August 4–7, 2014.

 
 

Elliott Shore Discusses ARL Strategic Thinking and Design in Europe, Canada, US

elliott-shoreElliott ShoreDuring the first three weeks of July, ARL executive director Elliott Shore travelled to Europe, Canada, and across the US to participate in five gatherings that focused on libraries, higher education, leadership, and innovation: the LIBER Conference, the Jisc-CNI Conference, the Breakthrough Models Academy, the ARL Leadership Fellows Institute, and the Aspen Institute’s Roundtable on Institutional Innovation. These events provided Shore with an opportunity to expand on the various initiatives informed by and resulting from ARL’s strategic thinking and design process.

 
 

Alternative Academic Careers: Potential Benefits to PhDs and the Academy

Workforce Transformation: Adding Value beyond Discovery

For centuries, library work has been about building collections, and then managing them. More recently, the emphasis shifted to discovery and access, which in turn led to an emphasis on instruction and information literacy initiatives. In some sense, one could create a cogent argument that the combination of services and collections will sustain our work for the foreseeable future. However, it also seems that this same argument will not facilitate innovation or necessarily help us provide the much-needed shift to “value beyond discovery.”

 
 

ARL Strategic Thinking and Design Highlighted by Chronicle of Higher Education

strategic-design-domains-for-the-research-libraryA July 7, 2014, post by the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Ubiquitous Librarian blogger, Brian Mathews, calls out ARL’s strategic thinking and design work for its “optimistic and opportunistic, bold vision for the future.” In the post, “Shifting from a Knowledge Service Provider to a Collaborative Partner,” Mathews refers to the slide deck (PDF) from a presentation delivered at the May 2014 ARL Membership Meeting as “one of the most thought-provoking items I’ve seen from library-land in quite a while.” He goes on to list particular points in the presentation that intrigue him.

 
 

Workforce Transformation Stories: ARL Launches Monthly Column

The column, Workforce Transformation Stories, is the outgrowth of many conversations and ARL activities, including the New Roles for New Times reports, Scenario Planning, the 2012 Human Resources Symposium, and Strategic Thinking and Design.

 
 

Workforce Transformation: It’s about the Work

When University of Maryland professor of sociology Philip Cohen was asked recently to consult with a graduate student on a journal article revision, the student had two challenges to satisfy his reviewers. The first challenge had to do with the complex use of GIS and geocoding; the reviewers wanted to see a particular deployment of GIS in the student’s US Census tract maps. The second challenge involved the use of census data itself. Professor Cohen easily offered advice on the latter and tried to think where the student could find help with GIS. No need, the graduate student assured him. The student had visited the campus library and gotten exactly the consultation he needed to incorporate GIS in his article revision.
 
 

Future-Proofing the Research Library: Sarah Thomas Delivers Judith Nadler Vision Lecture

Larsen librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard, presented the inaugural Judith Nadler Vision Lecture at the University of Chicago’s Joseph Regenstein Library. Thomas’s lecture, “Future-Proofing the Research Library,” explored the ways in which research libraries are adapting to change. As part of her presentation, she provided an overview of ARL's strategic thinking and design work.

 
 

ARL Membership Refines Strategic Thinking and Design at Spring 2014 Meeting

Almost all of the program sessions at this meeting focused on the current ARL strategic thinking and design process, upon which the Association embarked in the fall of 2013 to define its role in higher education and to maximize ARL’s ability to be agile and responsive to changing priorities and member needs. The meeting also included a panel discussion of SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem), a higher education and research community initiative to ensure the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs.

NCSU Hosts ARL Leadership Fellows for Site Visit

The 2013–2015 ARL Leadership Fellows were hosted by the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries and vice provost and director of libraries, Susan Nutter, for a four-day site visit, April 22–25, 2014. The program agenda included tours of the D. H. Hill Library as well as the newly constructed James B. Hunt Jr. Library. The tours were complemented by discussions with campus and library leaders about planning and designing campus and library spaces at NCSU. A reception was held with honorary guest James B. Hunt Jr., former governor of North Carolina. The program concluded with a series of elective sessions on various topics, including technology implementations, scholarly communication, digital library initiatives, and library planning, among others.

 
 

ARL Leadership and Career Development Program Convenes in New York

The institute included day-long site visits to two ARL member institutions: the New York University Libraries, hosted by dean of the division of libraries Carol Mandel, and the Columbia University Libraries/Information Services, hosted by vice president for information services and university librarian James Neal. The event also featured discussions led by ARL program directors Judy Ruttenberg and Julia Blixrud, and by Don Waters, program officer for scholarly communications and information technology at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Faculty for the institute included key library personnel from the greater New York City area as well as program consultant DeEtta Jones. 

 
 

ARL Hosts MLIS Students in Leadership Symposium at ALA Midwinter

curtis-small-and-camila-alire-at-2013-leadership-symposiumARL Annual Leadership SymposiumARL hosted its 10th Annual Leadership Symposium for master of library and information science (MLIS) students participating in ARL diversity recruitment programs during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 23–26, 2014. The ARL Leadership Symposium curriculum focuses on topics related to the major strategic areas of ARL, as well as transitioning into, and building career networks in, research libraries and archives. This year, 38 students participated in the three-day event, which provided them with valuable networking opporunities as well as professional development.

 
 

Edge Initiative for Public Library Technology Assessment Launches

As of January 22, interested public libraries may sign up via the Edge website.

Participating libraries will use Edge to complete an assessment of their public access technology services. Edge provides additional tools and training for libraries to make improvements and better serve their communities.

 
 

ARL Leadership Fellows Institute at Vanderbilt: Fellows and Connie Dowell Talk about the Program

The ARL Leadership Fellows program, designed and sponsored by ARL member libraries, helps develop future executive-level leaders of large research libraries and archives.

The institute—hosted by Connie Vinita Dowell, dean of libraries at Vanderbilt, and facilitated by Elliott Shore and Mark A. Puente of ARL—featured a full week of sessions with such leaders as Richard McCarty, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Vanderbilt; John Lutz, vice chancellor for information technology at Vanderbilt; Beth Fortune, vice chancellor for public affairs at Vanderbilt; and Charles Henry, president of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR).

Carol Pitts Diedrichs, vice provost and director of university libraries, the Ohio State University, began a one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) on Thursday, October 10, during the ARL Membership Meeting in Arlington, Virginia. She succeeds Wendy Pradt Lougee, university librarian and McKnight presidential professor, University of Minnesota. Lougee continues to serve as a member of both the ARL Board of Directors and the ARL Executive Committee as past president.

 
 

Career Enhancement Program Call for Applications: Deadline October 15

Master of library and information science (MLIS) students from racial and ethnic minority groups, who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or will complete 12 hours by the scheduled internship) in an American Library Association (ALA)–accredited program, are encouraged to apply for this enriching experience. The Career Enhancement Program, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ARL member libraries, provides each fellow a rewarding compensation package with a potential value in excess of $10,000 per person.

This executive leadership program meets the increasing demands for succession planning for research libraries with a new approach to preparing the next generation of deans and directors. Library directors are seeking a cohort of well-trained and sophisticated candidates who possess the necessary experience and perspective to succeed in premier leadership positions in large, complex institutions. The ARL Leadership Fellows program provides such a cohort.
