image © OSU, photo by Meera on Buckeyes BlogARL president Carol Pitts Diedrichs of The Ohio State University (OSU) convened the 164th ARL Membership Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon, May 6, 2014. Almost all of the program sessions at this meeting focused on the current ARL strategic thinking and design process, upon which the Association embarked in the fall of 2013 to define its role in higher education and to maximize ARL’s ability to be agile and responsive to changing priorities and member needs. The meeting also included a panel discussion of SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem), a higher education and research community initiative to ensure the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs.
The fourth issue of Synergy
announces the fourth annual Leadership Institute for MLS graduate students. The Leadership Institute objectives are:
- provide a theoretical overview of macro-level issues facing research libraries;
- provide advice on career opportunities in, and transitioning into a research library;
- develop a community of learners amongst the participants; provide opportunities for both formal and informal mentoring; and
- provide opportunities to network with ARL library leaders.
In this issue of Synergy, five authors discuss the vital role residency programs have played in the recruitment and professional development of newly credentialed librarians. The authors are:

In this inaugural issue of Synergy: News from ARL Diversity Initiatives four participants reflect on their experiences during the ARL Leadership Institute. Bergis Jules, diversity scholar in the Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce, answers the question, "How has the ARL Leadership Institute and Diversity Scholarship impacted my career?" Lyn Batty and Vaishali Jahagirdar, fellows in the ARL Academy, report the highlights of the institute from their perspective. Shannon D. Jones, a Leadership and Career Development Program fellow, describes how the institute reenergized her desire to become a library leader.

This edition of Synergy features the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program (LCDP). It focuses on the LCDP fellows' experience at the Research, Teaching, and Learning Institute hosted by Joan Giesecke, dean of libraries, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries, and Celebrating 10 Years of the LCDP.
Carlette Washington-HoaglandARL has appointed Carlette Washington-Hoagland as a visiting program officer (VPO) for diversity and leadership programs, effective today, October 1, 2014. Washington-Hoagland will take the lead in managing the assessment of the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program (LCDP), will organize a review of ARL mentor programs to inform component enhancements, will contribute to the planning of the annual ARL Leadership Symposium, and will support other research projects and programs as needed.
Registration is now open for “Leading a Strategic Assessment Program in a Research Library: An ARL Seminar for Recently Appointed Assessment Professionals,” to be held in Washington, DC, May 14–15, 2015. This two-day, in-person event is designed for librarians and coordinators who are new to the roles and responsibilities of assessment. The seminar will be supplemented with pre- and post-workshop webcasts (dates to be determined) and independent learning activities, plus connection with a network of experienced colleagues who will provide ongoing support.
This issue of Synergy features three brief articles on a range of topics around trends in the library and archival profession. Camille Salas reflects on a service-learning project that was implemented as a product of formal library and information science coursework on universal design, and the nexus with the “makerspace” movement in libraries. Harrison Inefuku provides an update about the ARL/Society of American Archivists (SAA) Mosaic Program, a collaborative diversity recruitment program entering its second year. The final article features three ARL/Music Library Association (MLA) Diversity and Inclusion Initiative (DII) fellows—Joy Doan, Rahni Kennedy, and Patrick Sifuentes—in a virtual fireside chat as they reflect on their experiences from the past year of their fellowships and the DII program.
