Career Enhancement Program

Program Components

Fellowship Experience & Overview

As an ARL Career Enhancement Program Fellow, you will have a unique opportunity to create a meaningful, practical experience in an ARL library. Each fellow will be matched with a host institution—based on interest and availability—that can best provide a rich and rewarding fellowship experience.

In the Career Enhancement Program, each fellow will experience:

  • a six- to twelve-week internship experience in an ARL library;

  • an opportunity to work with other LIS MLS graduate students in a cohort environment (up to three fellows assigned to the same institution);

  • academic credit for the practical experience (fellow is responsible for arranging this program component with their home institution);

  • a mentoring relationship with a professional librarian while on campus for the fellowship (see Mentoring Relationship); and

  • an opportunity to attend the annual ARL Leadership Institute (held during the ALA Midwinter Meeting).

Fellowship Compensation

The ARL Career Enhancement Program will provide each fellow with a rewarding compensation package. The total compensation package exceeds $10,000 per fellow and includes:

  • a stipend of $4,800 (240 hours x $20 per hour);

  • a potential academic stipend up to $2,500 (must be enrolled in a practical study class during the fellowship experience to qualify for this stipend);

  • a housing stipend up to $2,000;

  • a travel stipend up to $1,000 for travel expenses (ground and air) to and from the fellowship site; and

  • travel and accommodation cost to attend the annual ARL Leadership Institute in January (estimated to cost $1,000).

Leadership Institute

The next annual ARL Leadership Institute will be held January 21-26, 2009, in Denver, Colorado. During the Leadership Institute, each fellow will:

  • have an opportunity to learn about macro-level issues facing research libraries;
  • connect with other program participants;
  • meet their mentor and host institution representatives; and
  • participate in ARL career networking opportunities:
