156th ARL Membership Meeting

ARL President Brinley Franklin, Vice Provost, University of Connecticut Libraries, will convene the 156th ARL Membership Meeting on Wednesday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will adjourn at noon on Friday, April 30.
Program
The program theme is “Globalization of Higher Education and Research Libraries” and will feature remarks by the following speakers:
- Phyllis M. Wise, Provost and Executive Vice President, University of Washington
- Nancy E. Weiss, General Counsel, US Institute of Museum and Library Services, and US representative at UNESCO and World Intellectual Property Organization
- Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law, University of Ottawa
- Peter Zhou, Director and Assistant University Librarian, C. V. Starr East Asian Library, University of California, Berkeley
- Greg Tananbaum, Founder and CEO of Anianet, a free professional network for Chinese scientists, professors, and other scholarly professionals
- Martha Choe, Chief Administrative Officer, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- James G. Neal, Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian, Columbia University
- Deborah Jakubs, Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway University Librarian and Vice Provost for Library Affairs, Duke University
- Bernie Reilly, President, Center for Research Libraries
- Lizanne Payne, Print Archives Program Manager, Center for Research Libraries

Committee Schedule
The ARL Board, Committees, and Working Groups will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 27 and 28. Topical briefings sponsored by the Strategic Direction Steering Committees will take place Wednesday afternoon between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Business Meeting
The Business Meeting, for ARL member representatives only, will be held Thursday morning, 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Luncheons
Lunch will be available on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, box lunches will be available beginning at 11:30 a.m.; a room without a speaker will be available for those who want to have a lunch conversation with colleagues. On Thursday, lunch will be served and followed by a program session.
Reception
On Wednesday, April 28, the University of Washington and Washington State University
Libraries are sponsoring a reception in Seattle’s spectacular Olympic Sculpture Park and
Pavilion. Refreshments will be served in the pavilion. Weather permitting, attendees will have the opportunity to stroll the park and take in the views of Puget Sound as the sun sets.
Dining with Colleagues
On Thursday evening, April 29, no formal reception is planned. Local restaurants will be
identified and meeting attendees will be encouraged to sign up for a no-host dinner in one
of Seattle’s many fine restaurants.
