The Association of Research Libraries and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) jointly sponsor the Institute on Scholarly Communication (ISC) to promote the development of library-led outreach on scholarly communication issues. The institute has hundreds of alumni forming a community that provides peer support and professional sharing of information relating to campus outreach.
The institute's initial and signature event was a series of 3-day immersive learning experiences that prepared participants as local experts within their libraries and provided a structure for developing a program plan for scholarly communication outreach customized for each participant's institution. To achieve this goal, participant teams conduct an environmental scan before the institute, engaged in a series of active learning experiences during the event, and create elements for a program plan for implementation at their home institution. Originally developed as a national event, in later years regional institutes sponsored by consortial partners were conducted. The ISC also has hosted single-day events and webinars to provide other opportunities for libraries to develop a scholarly communication plan.
FAIR (Freely Accessible Institute Resources)
A variety of resources have been developed as part of the institute initiative and include freely available Web tools and webcasts.
The FAIR site provides a space for institute faculty and alumni to share outreach resources with the broader community. Many resources are developed exclusively for the Institute but others may be developed by academic libraries and selected as FAIR resources.
If you are interested in contributing resources to the FAIR site, please contact Julia Blixrud, ARL, or Kara Malenfant, ACRL.
