Reports to the Director of Scholarly Communication and works with her to set priorities, assign responsibilities and direct activities associated with scholarly communication initiatives and services. The Assistant Director of Scholarly Communication and Institutional Repository Manager oversees collections and provides user support for Virginia Tech’s 60,000-item institutional repository, VTechWorks. The incumbent solicits, submits, organizes, and maintains content in the repository; ensures that content and metadata in the repository are of high quality according to relevant digital library and archival standards; works with the Scholarly Communication Repository Application Administrator to ensure that the repository functions well for users; and helps Virginia Tech faculty, students, and staff submit content to the repository through integrated systems (e.g., Symplectic Elements) as well as through the repository’s deposit interface.

Required Qualifications:

- An ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent advanced degree in a related field
- Very knowledgeable about the issues in scholarly communication, including open access, copyright, and fair use
- Significant demonstrated experience with digital library and/or repository systems used by libraries
- Excellent customer service skills and experience providing customer service in an education, library, or similar environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with digital text, image, audio and video content types and with preservation standards for various kinds of digital media (e.g., PDF/A)
- Knowledge of digital library metadata schemas such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, or PREMIS
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team member
- Evidence of successful project management skills
- Demonstrated engagement in professional development and the library profession
