Science and Engineering Librarian
The University of Virginia Library seeks an innovative Science and Engineering Librarian to contribute to and build an integrated program of services, teaching and outreach to STEM fields. The successful candidate will work to deepen the library's connections and collaborations with faculty and students throughout the university in ways that speak to disciplinary needs. The Science and Engineering Librarian will serve as liaison to selected departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is part of the combined Research Data Services and Social, Natural, and Engineering Sciences unit, and will collaborate with a cohort of science, engineering, social science, and data librarians to: support research and teaching in the natural sciences and engineering; advance and promote existing services to enhance research across the lifecycle and across all levels of research expertise; identify emerging needs in these fields and envision new services in response; and develop and strengthen relationships between the library, faculty and students, and other centers on campus, positioning the library as a key partner.
Responsibilities
- Research and Scholarship: Respond to faculty, students, and staff in select departments on research information requests and contribute to and enhance research and information services and programs. Consult with researchers on data management and scholarly communication needs, working with colleagues in content stewardship and repository services. Collaborate with the Collections team to ensure acquisition of and access to appropriate resources and materials; and with other liaisons to support interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and collections.
- Outreach and Engagement: Educate faculty, students, and staff in select disciplines about a range of library services, including scholarly communication and publishing, digital initiatives, and data services. Maintain awareness of changes and trends within relevant disciplines and propose and promote library services to engage new models of research within the sciences and engineering.
- Teaching and Learning: Engage with faculty and instructors to integrate information, digital, and data literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum. Develop and offer library-sponsored classes and educational resources to support information and data literacies across the university, and partner with colleagues in Teaching and Learning to create novel and improved approaches.
Qualifications, Required
- A Master's degree in library or information science with evidence of a strong background in science and engineering, or an advanced degree in a science or engineering discipline with evidence of experience in information or knowledge management and services.
- Experience in scientific workflows through coursework or research sufficient to demonstrate knowledge of the scientific method and research practices.
- Knowledge of data management practices, including planning, documentation, reuse, and sharing.
- Teaching experience and competence in translating technical knowledge and discipline-based research methodologies to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues, clients, and administrators at all levels.
Qualifications, Preferred
- Familiarity with information and data sources for the sciences and engineering, data wrangling and visualization tools and processes, and data analytic tools and methods.
- Experience with sponsored research, including outreach and education for broader impact.
- Knowledge of tools and technologies common in the sciences, for example programming languages, database management systems, and high-performance computing environments.
