Learning Services Librarian

The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (UL&LS) seeks a Learning Services Librarian to support a dynamic library system with a strong outreach and instruction program. This is a full-time, 12-month tenure track faculty position with the rank of Assistant Professor and offers a negotiable annual salary based on qualifications and includes full benefits.

Position Description

The Learning Services Librarian will design, teach and assess information literacy curricula in a wide variety of disciplines and formats. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative team focused on improving teaching and learning at the UL&LS. The Librarian will have a passion for teaching and be excited about providing in-person and online instruction to the learning community at UNM.

The successful candidate will establish and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and researchers and employ effective communication, organization, analytic, and problem-solving skills. They will work to meet research and service requirements for tenure and participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook. Working some evenings and weekends is required.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

• An earned master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent by the start date.

• Two years of teaching experience.

• Experience designing and building digital learning objects.

Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with information literacy concepts and trends (e.g., the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, curriculum mapping, assessment).

• Demonstrated skill and experience in providing instruction in face-to-face, blended, and online environments, including the design and assessment of instructional materials and activities.

• Enthusiastic about keeping current with, learning how to use, and sharing new technologies. Working knowledge of tutorial software (e.g., Captivate, Camtasia, Guide on the Side) and instruction related technologies (e.g., PollEverywhere, LibGuides).

• Demonstrated skill in using principles of effective design to communicate information or solve problems.

• Experience teaching credit-bearing courses.

• Experience or demonstrated interest in working with faculty and students to support their research and instructional endeavors.

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills as well as a strong service orientation.

• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

Primary Duties

• Provides instruction in research and in the use of library and information resources in a variety of disciplines.

• Develops and maintains online learning objects, including but not limited to web-based tutorials, instructional videos, research guides and websites.

• Develops shared instructional materials in various formats -- including in-class activities, handouts and training materials -- working closely with other librarians.

• Teaches OILS 101 (3 credits), Introduction to Information Studies.

• Provides reference services.

• Builds relationships with faculty and students to support their research and instructional endeavors. May serve as the library liaison to one or more academic departments.

• Participates in UL&LS faculty governance and in library management as required.

• Meets scholarship and service requirements for tenure as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.

• Contributes to UL&LS initiatives that further UNM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

UL&LS contains over 3 million volumes and includes four branch libraries: Centennial Science and Engineering Library; Fine Arts & Design Library; Parish Memorial Library (business and economics); and Zimmerman Library (humanities, social sciences, and education). Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections and the Indigenous Nations Library Program. The UL&LS grants bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in its Organization, Information & Learning Sciences (OILS) Program, which prepares professionals to help individuals, groups, and organizations to learn in more effective ways.
