Position Announcement

Virtual Services Librarian

 

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the team as an Virtual Services Librarian. This is a tenure-track academic appointment, carrying full faculty status and responsibilities including librarianship, scholarship, and professional service to meet both the Libraries’ and University’s requirements for promotion and tenure.

Reporting through the Director of Public Services, Evans Library, the Virtual Services Librarian will be responsible for the administration of the Libraries’ existing online suite of reference services and tools, as well as coordinating the development and implementation of emerging library technologies in support of learning and research. The person in this position will work closely with colleagues from across the University Libraries. May supervise staff.

The person in this position must be a self-starter, detail-oriented and enjoy solving problems in a collaborative, collegial environment with continually evolving technologies. The Librarian is expected to maintain knowledge of national trends and developments in virtual services. The position serves on committees for the Libraries, the university, and other organizations, contributes to the profession, and engages in scholarship.

                                                                   

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution (or international equivalent)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to chat and email reference referrals, FAQs, online room reservations, calendaring software; statistical and analytical tools, and interactive web-based forms

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Demonstrated experience handling complex, analytical work, including the ability to identify, analyze and evaluate problems and devise solutions

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Experience with managing products from Springshare and/or Altarama

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of virtual services, such as library research guides, event calendars, wayfinding tools, digital signage, equipment booking, service point scheduling, e-reserves & document management, citation management tools and streaming media

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, APIs, and other web technologies

  • Familiarity with web content accessibility guidelines (such as Section 508 or W3C)

  • Experience working with vendors; e.g., reviewing licenses

Currently the staffing includes 268 individuals which includes 90 librarians holding faculty status.

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $50,500. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA-CREF; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax. Funding is available for professional travel and development activities.
