About the University of Toronto Libraries
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked sixth among peer institutions in North America. The system consists of 44 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 215 graduate programs, over 60 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million print volumes, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 29,554 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Library system seeks a knowledgeable, innovative and experienced individual to provide leadership in scholarly publishing data analysis to support a range of bibliometric and research impact projects and services at the University of Toronto. Reporting jointly to the Associate Chief Librarian for Collections and Materials Management and the Associate Chief Librarian for Science Research and Information, this librarian will have primary responsibility for the harvesting, storing, and distribution of bibliometric and research impact data; support use of this data throughout the university; and monitor and report on developments in the fields of research impact and scholarly publishing. The librarian will build capacity in this area across UTL. In collaboration with the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, the Office of the Provost, and other partners, the librarian will promote awareness of the trends and issues related to university-level rankings, bibliometrics, and research impact. As this is a new position, the reporting relationship may evolve over time.
Representative Projects:
* Working with colleagues in Scholarly Communications and Copyright, Collection Development, and UTL Information Technology Services, to ensure the systematic harvesting, storage, and distribution of University of Toronto research output data
* Preparing analytical and briefing papers for senior university administrators on changes and trends in bibliometrics
* Defining and developing the Library's role in the area of bibliometrics and research impact at the University of Toronto
* Working with liaison librarians in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, to develop a program to support faculty and graduate students interested in research impact metrics, benchmarking, research profiling tools, and other methods of measuring impact
* Analysing and evaluating bibliometric data sets such as the data obtained for UTL from the California Digital Libraries Article Processing Charge (APC) modeling tool
* Coordinating UTL's participation in large-scale bibliometric studies with partner organizations
Required Qualifications
1. An accredited degree from a Master's level program in library and information studies
2. Graduate-level experience in a data- or statistics-intensive discipline in the sciences or social sciences, or a master's degree in statistics
3. Knowledge of library acquisitions and scholarly journal publishing practices, standards and trends. Strong knowledge of developments, models and trends in scholarly publishing and in open access
4. Understanding of discipline-specific challenges and opportunities relating to bibliometrics and research impact
5. Excellent skills in and knowledge of methodologies and tools for computer-based data analysis and manipulation, including the ability to design tools and methods for data capture and normalization
6. Ability to work with and manipulate large amounts of complex quantitative and bibliometric data, and effectively manage data sets over time
7. Strong knowledge of library systems and bibliographic tools
8. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
9. Self-motivation and ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to meet deadlines.
10. Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and narrative descriptions
11. Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A collaborative approach to problem solving and the ability to work across organizational boundaries in service of user needs.
12. Initiative, creativity, flexibility and a strong commitment to ongoing professional development
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience offering instructional sessions to faculty and/or students
Salary and Terms of Appointment
This is a permanent status stream appointment to be filled at the Librarian II or III rank. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
