About the Position and Responsibilities:

The Director of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications identifies and accelerates the adoption of new and emerging forms of 21st century digital research and learning. These technologies include, but are not limited to, data visualization, digital text editing, geospatial analysis, linked data, network analysis, and the semantic web. In this role you will also promote fair use, open access, and open licensing to extend the reach of digital projects and publications. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning, the Director will lead the Office of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication in the Vanderbilt University Library. The Director of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication will work with team members to organize digital scholarship workshops, working groups, and related programming such as Open Access Week, GIS Day, and Open Data Day.

 

Promote Digital Scholarship in the Library, on Campus, and to the Public

  • Educate students, faculty, and staff about new and emerging tools and techniques in digital scholarship;
  • Organize workshop series during the fall and spring semesters on digital technologies;
  • Schedule weekly working groups for geospatial analysis, linked data and the semantic web, tiny data, and XQuery;
  • Promote relevant digital scholarship to faculty, students, and the general public through blogging, writing tutorials, and releasing open source code and data.

 Foster the Scholarly Communications Program at Vanderbilt University

  • Collaborate with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to provide education about copyright law, open access, and emerging trends in scholarly communications to faculty, staff, and students;
  • Work with library directors and liaisons to support the adoption of SIPx across campus;
  • Foster efforts to promote best practices in research data management;
  • Assist the members of the library digital lab with expanding the reach of the library’s digitization program by depositing digital objects in the HathiTrust, Internet Archive and Wikipedia, as appropriate. 

Participate in Campus-Wide Activities

  • Apply selectively for grants and other forms of internal and external support to advance digital scholarship and scholarly communication projects;
  • Contribute to the library’s co-curricular efforts to support immersive learning at Vanderbilt;
  • Strengthen relations with other campus centers at Vanderbilt, including the Center for Digital Humanities, Digital Humanities Center, Vanderbilt Institute for Digital Learning, and the Wond’ry.

Research and Development

  • Present and publish regularly about trends in digital scholarship and scholarly communications;
  • Evaluate the relevance of new technologies for digital scholarship and scholarly communications;
  • Contribute to library strategic initiatives and priorities as requested

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Director of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication will supervise four staff members in the Vanderbilt University Libraries.

 

Budgetary Responsibilities: The Director of Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication manages a small budget to support related events and programming.


Communications:
 

Internal: Regular contact with members of the library staff, university administrators, faculty members, and students


External
: Regular contact with intellectual property scholars, open access advocates, digital scholarship librarians, and scholarly communications librarians at other universities

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

 

This position requires a graduate degree in Library and Information Science. An additional Master or Doctoral degree in another academic discipline is preferred.

Experience with promoting digital scholarship in a university or other nonprofit setting; demonstrated understanding of copyright law; proven ability to manage co-workers in a collaborative, collegial style; balances research with “getting things done”; enthusiasm for teaching and writing about digital scholarship and scholarly communications. Preferred: Knowledge of one or more programming languages, preferably JavaScript, Julia, Python, R or XQuery.
