As a partner in the creation and dissemination of knowledge, the International Studies Department of the Charles E. Young Research Library supports the UCLA community by selecting the resources and providing the services necessary for world class research and instruction. The department is home to specialists in area and international studies, with particular emphasis on Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Slavic states, the Middle East and Latin America. These area specialists serve as liaisons to academic departments and research units in their areas of responsibility, partnering with faculty and students on a wide variety of research projects and teaching initiatives. IS librarians and support staff serve the faculty and students in these disciplines by cultivating research-level collections in a variety of formats, as well as providing high-level research services, in person and via e-mail and digital reference. Area specialist librarians in International Studies (IS) work closely together and in cooperation with librarians from other UCLA Library units to support interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning. International Studies librarians participate in a number of enterprise-wide initiatives, including the International Digital Ephemera Project (IDEP) and Collecting L.A. In addition, they engage in a variety of activities to expose UCLA collections to wider audiences, including digitization projects and exhibits featuring library materials.
 
Reporting to the Interim Head of International Studies the Librarian/Curator for International Studies and Special Projects Coordinator coordinates enterprise-wide initiatives including the International Digital Ephemera Project (IDEP) and Collecting L.A; engages in outreach and a variety of collections activities to expose UCLA collections to wider audiences, including digitization projects and exhibits featuring library materials. The incumbent directly supervises 0.5 FTE and works with other area and international studies librarians and library assistants to manage department workflows, and serves as liaison to one or more international studies departments in either Slavic, Eastern European or Western European Studies.
 
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
 
* Develops and manages the library's collections regardless of format, language, period, or place of publication, in the areas of the social sciences and humanities published in or relating to assigned European, Scandinavian and/or Slavic areas. Utilizes a creative and agile approach to collection development that is married with aggressive outreach and collaboration with scholars.
* Manages library allocations from grant funds administered by non-library centers such as the Center for European and Eurasian Studies and/or the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
* Collaborates with development on donor cultivation and support for assigned areas; provides information for proposals and reports to donors.
* Serves as liaison to assigned departments.
* Participates in the subject consortia such as the Pacific Coast Slavic Librarians Consortium (PACSLAV), in CRL's Slavic and East European Microfilming Project (SEEMP), the Western European Studies Section (WESS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and in other area-specific consortial and professional activities.
* As subject specialist for assigned areas, provides in-depth reference, instruction and research assistance to faculty and students in relevant units. May take on additional subject areas based on expertise and Library need.
* Collaborates whenever possible with relevant faculty and students on digital projects, research initiatives, and curricular/teaching activities.
* Supervises, recruits and trains 0.5 FTE Library Assistant; assigning work and evaluating performance as appropriate.
* Collaborates with Library Special Collections on the acquisition, processing, digitization and preservation of primary source collections and rare books.
* In collaboration with other library staff, develops new projects, programming, services, instruction, and other activities that support scholarship, teaching, and learning.
* Creates and manages exhibit workflows, in coordination with colleagues in Library Special Collections and Library Communications.
* Coordinates departmental participation in digitization projects, in collaboration with the UCLA Digital Library and others. Manages the project pipeline and creates workflows to ensure timely completion of projects.
* Serves as departmental contact for the International Digital Ephemera Program (IDEP), the UCLA Library's initiative to digitize, preserve and provide broad public access to print, images, multimedia and social networking resources produced worldwide and for the Collecting L.A. initiative to document Los Angeles' diverse communities.
* Other projects/duties as assigned.
