Position Summary


The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Director for Collection and Technology Services (ADCTS). The ADCTS is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating the operations of the Collection and Technology Services division which include acquisition, receipt, control, cataloging, processing, and preservation of the law library’s information resources. These responsibilities require professional judgment and a clear understanding of the mission of the Kathrine R. Everett Law Library which supports students, faculty, the university, and the state.


The ADCTS provides leadership in the selection and management of information products in all formats, including licensed digital materials. The ADCTS oversees the digital scholarship repository and law faculty publications database. This Assistant Director also provides leadership in the library’s digitization and digital preservation initiatives, including collaborative projects with other libraries, consortia, and other potential partners. The ADCTS is responsible for careful and effective management of the library’s collection budget, including balancing expenditures from a variety of fund sources and responding to changing financial resources. The ADCTS prepares regular budget and division reports to the Deputy Director and Director. The ADCTS analyzes collection system requirements and recommends and implements ongoing updates to this system. The ADCTS works collaboratively with the Assistant Director for Public Services on collection policy decisions including collection review and cancellation projects as well as updates to the library’s collection development policy. The ADCTS will be active in law and/or library professional organizations and will contribute to the advancement of law or library practice through scholarship. The ADCTS administers the hiring and training of personnel for the Collection and Technology Services division and guides this division’s staff through changes in workflow in response to new information technologies, new patterns of information creation and use, and other factors. The ADCTS also encourages professional development of librarians and staff in this division.


The ADCTS joins the Director, the Deputy Director, and the Assistant Director for Public Services to form the law library’s Management Team. As a member of the Management Team, the ADCTS contributes expertise in legal information trends and policy and helps shape the overall vision for library services. The ADCTS also engages collaboratively with counterparts in other UNC campus libraries, in the Triangle Research Libraries Network, and with other law libraries with similar missions. The ADCTS supervises two librarians, one part-time and three full-time staff members, student assistants, and the work of other librarians and staff who contribute to this division’s services. The ADCTS reports to the Deputy Director of the law library.


This appointment is governed by the Law Librarian Ranking Plan, which provides terms for multi-year contracts, reappointments, and promotions. This ranking plan supports general faculty status for UNC-CH law librarians. If the ADCTS holds a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution, he or she may be nominated by the Director for a secondary appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and for teaching courses in the School of Law as an overload activity. UNC-CH law librarians with clinical law faculty appointments currently enjoy privileges and responsibilities of non-tenure track law faculty including attendance at faculty meetings and limited voting rights, appointment to faculty committees, and participation in a broad spectrum of faculty activities.


Educational Requirements


Master’s degree in Librarianship or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; J.D. from an ABA accredited institution preferred. All required degrees must be conferred by accredited institution prior to the employee’s start date.


Qualifications and Experience


Minimum three years academic law librarian experience; Consultative style of management; Demonstrated interest in and experience with law library digital initiatives including open access repositories and digitization projects; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Demonstrated commitment to the law library profession through active engagement in library associations and/or publications.
