The University of Chicago (UChicago) Library is building a cohort of librarians that will be integral to the success of our new Center for Digital Scholarship. These new hires will integrate with current staff to provide expertise and services that empower faculty and students in the exploration of new methodologies, the management and analysis of complex data, the visualization of theoretical relationships, and the sharing and preservation of research results.
    
The Library is seeking to fill the following positions with talented and forward-looking librarians focused on engagement with digital scholarship:
*    Director, Center for Digital Scholarship (Req. # 03568)
*    Biomedical Data Librarian  (Req. # 03569)
*    Social Sciences Data Librarian (Req. # 03570)

These positions will join others from recent and upcoming searches, including the Scholarly Communication Librarian, GIS/Maps Librarian, and CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation for Energy Research.  The resulting suite of skills will be further extended by future searches for a metadata librarian and a digital collections librarian. 
 
These new positions will work with existing subject and functional experts in the library and with partners across campus to build a research and teaching focused center that provides space, technology, and services that meet the needs and priorities of the University community. Successful candidates will become part of a collaborative environment with a renewed focus on outreach and engagement with faculty, students, and other constituents to create communities of interest in digital scholarship, data curation, research innovation, and teaching and learning.

Director, Center for Digital Scholarship
The Director of the Center for Digital Scholarship will provide leadership for the development of a new Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) at the University of Chicago Library that will provide space, technology, and services to faculty and students to facilitate the exploration of new methodologies enabled by digital technology, the analysis and management of complex data, the visualization of theoretical relationships, and the sharing of research results.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Information Technology & Digital Scholarship, the Director of the CDS will be responsible for developing a vision for the CDS and for working closely with the Director of the Science Library and the Director of Research and Teaching Support to design and plan the rollout of services based on the needs and priorities of the University community. The Director will supervise the Scholarly Communications Librarian and the Dissertation Office and will partner with other Library subject and functional experts to deliver and coordinate programs and services. The Director will collaborate with faculty to provide curriculum-integrated teaching and research project support.  In consultation with other discipline and functional specialists the Director will identify and evaluate emerging tools and methodologies to integrate them into the CDS support services and will consult on the identification, acquisition, and/or creation of digital collections appropriate to specific research projects, including providing expert evaluation of existing digital resources.

The Director of the CDS works with other groups on campus to coordinate services and ensure a seamless support environment for faculty and students. The Director develops outreach strategies to promote CDS programs and services to the campus community and undertakes ongoing assessment to ensure CDS is meeting the needs of faculty and students.  The Director will represent the Library's digital scholarship activities at national and international conferences and will participate in inter-institutional collaborations that provide national or discipline-specific infrastructures for digital scholarship activities.
 
The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in the humanities, social sciences, sciences or library or information science with a focus on digital scholarship or data curation; and a minimum of 4 years of experience in an administrative position that includes successful management and supervision of personnel.

The Search Committee will evaluate the candidate's demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, evidence of significant and progressively responsible experience engaging with and managing digital scholarly projects and services at a major academic institution; ability to advise on hardware and software purchasing and implementation; demonstrated understanding of the scholarly applications of digital tools, metadata standards, data encoding standards, and data management and curation practices; ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, and students; experience with proposal development and grant writing; and evidence of engagement at a national or international level with digital scholarship initiatives.

Biomedical Data Librarian
The Biomedical Data Librarian (the Librarian) supports research and teaching at the University of Chicago Library with a focus on the Biological Sciences Division and the Medical Center, providing data research services, such as finding, manipulating, analyzing, and managing data; research and clinical support services such as instruction, outreach, and conducting systematic reviews. The Librarian develops innovative programs and services through an understanding of research and teaching trends, the structure of the scholarly literature in medicine and biological sciences, patterns of scholarly communication, and data lifecycle management.

Reporting to the Director of Library Research in Medical Education, this position is situated in the John Crerar Library and will work closely with the Library's new Center for Digital Scholarship to provide data, research, and clinical support services. The Librarian ensures that library staff is informed of current research and data trends and activities, including available research tools and resources. The Librarian identifies and organizes training sessions, partnering with others at the University involved in scientific research, and provides collection development support in selected subject areas. Other responsibilities include service on library and university-wide committees and task forces and participation in local, regional, and national professional organizations.

The successful candidate must have an MLS or MLIS from an accredited school of library information science or an advanced subject degree; academic library experience, experience using quantitative or qualitative data resources; teaching experience; familiarity with software for statistical or qualitative analysis, for example, SPSS, Stata, R, Atlas.ti, or NVivo; and experience with databases and resources in the biological sciences and medicine. An undergraduate or graduate degree in the sciences is strongly preferred, along with knowledge of one or more foreign languages and experience conducting systematic reviews.

Social Sciences Data Librarian
The University of Chicago Library seeks an innovative service-oriented librarian to develop and deliver social sciences data services, and to promote research data management, data literacy, and use of data resources at the University of Chicago Library. The Librarian will work closely with the Library's new Center for Digital Scholarship to build coordinated services and develop relationships with faculty and students.  The Librarian will assist with discovery, acquisition and use of social science data resources and services. The Librarian will identify opportunities to promote and develop new library services and expertise around data.

The Library seeks candidates with skills and abilities to help transform instruction, outreach, reference and collections and who are creative in solving problems in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities and Duties
Reporting to the Library's Director of Research and Teaching Support, the Librarian will:

*    Provide consultations in support of research data management and quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses
*    Support faculty using data-driven assignments through consultation and course integrated library instruction
*    Build and promote data collections and services in the social sciences
*    Serve as subject liaison to sociology
*    Serve as official representative to the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
*    Contribute to overall reference, instruction, and collection development for the Library
*    Serve on committees as assigned
*    Provide evening and weekend service as assigned
*    Engage in professional and/or subject discipline organizations

The successful candidate must have an MLS or MLIS from an accredited school of library information science or an advanced degree in the social sciences; academic library experience, experience with quantitative social science data and statistical software (such as SPSS, Stata, SAS, R) and experience providing instruction and consultations in a library or research setting.

The Search Committee will evaluate candidates' record and accomplishments in order to determine their knowledge of social science data sources (including ICPSR and US Census); data information literacy competencies, knowledge of social science research methodologies and research data management principles and best practices; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines; and effective oral and written communications skills.  The Search Committee will also evaluate candidate's experience working with qualitative data and software, understanding of intellectual property and ethical issues in social science research, knowledge of government information data sources, knowledge of digital scholarship activities, and additional advanced degrees in the social sciences or data sciences.
