The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked sixth among peer institutions in North America. The system consists of 44 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 215 graduate programs, over 60 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million print volumes, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 29,554 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year.  The Libraries' data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) seeks an innovative and knowledgeable librarian to lead its Scholarly Communication and Copyright Office (SCCO) and coordinate strategic initiatives and projects related to the rapidly evolving areas of copyright and scholarly sharing.  This is a leadership position that works collaboratively with the library, faculty, students and the University's administration, including (among others) the University's Legal Counsel and the Office of the Vice-President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI), to ensure that the University makes the best possible decisions related to scholarly communication, open access, and intellectual property rights and copyright. Key activities include participating in the development of University policy applying fair dealing and other use rights; providing copyright advice, as appropriate; developing best practices and raising awareness of open access publishing, scholarly communications and copyright issues and managing an increasingly popular Syllabus Service.

The Librarian will assist faculty with publishing choices, publishing agreements, transactional licenses and management of intellectual property. The Librarian will collaborate with UTL and University colleagues to promote awareness of current scholarly publishing options, including the use of the University's research repository (T-space) and Journal Production System. The Librarian will also be responsible for exploring the potential for a library publishing program, with a view to supporting new and sustainable publishing models. The Librarian will also work collaboratively with the Collection Development Department on issues related to subscriptions and licensing language, particularly related to user rights.

This position will require internal consultation and liaison with faculty, senior university administration and library colleagues. External consultation and liaison will occur with other universities, agencies promoting open access publishing, copyright groups and licensing bodies.
