The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University seeks a collaborative and forward-thinking leader for the new position of Associate Director for Collections, Research & Education. The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. Part of the Yale University Library system, the Beinecke Library was established in 1963 with a gift from the Beinecke family. Its robust collections are known and heavily used by Yale faculty and students as well as scholars drawn from the U.S. and around the world to create new scholarship. In the last 10 years, the library has grown dramatically to a staff to 110, while building an extensive schedule of readings, talks, concerts, exhibits, and other programs. The Beinecke Library has a robust program of acquisitions, annually adding, on average, 10,000--15,000 books, 1,200 feet of archival material, and more than 3,000 discrete manuscripts, all supported by endowments.
Reporting to the Director of the Beinecke Library, the Associate Director will provide leadership to the Collections, Research & Education (CRE) Department, which includes seven curators, the head of research services, a research librarian, an administrative assistant, and the Fellowship Program. The Associate Director is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for enhancing and effectively managing the library's extensive outreach and academic programs for Yale students, faculty and the international scholarly community. In close association with the Director, the Associate Director coordinates the collection development efforts of the Library's curatorial staff. The Associate Director serves as a member of the Library's senior leadership team, representing the CRE Department and providing a voice for the curatorial, research, and education staff in strategic and operational planning for Beinecke Library.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the centrality of the humanities to join the leadership team at one of the world's preeminent rare book and manuscript libraries. The Beinecke Library seeks a leader with a strong commitment to research, teaching, and the intellectual mission of the Beinecke Library and dedication to exploring how collections can be used to support the university as a place of inquiry and learning. The Associate Director will demonstrate the ability to build relationships across the Library and a commitment to teamwork and transparency. The successful candidate may come from the traditional world of rare book libraries and special collections, from academia more generally, or from a foundation, museum, or other institution focused on the humanities. Requirements include a master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited post-graduate degree in a humanities or other related discipline or in museum studies (a Ph.D. in a humanities field would be preferred); at least eight years of related professional experience and accomplishments in a complex organization; demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library drawn from an understanding of current trends in special collections librarianship and digital humanities and/or an understanding of humanities research and scholarship; demonstrated success in supervising staff who are independent-minded and passionate about their work; strong commitment to collection building and using those collections to develop innovative public programs; excellent analytical, oral and written communications skills; consensus-building and problem-solving skills; and experience coordinating multiple projects and bringing them to fruition.
