The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked among the top-10 research libraries in North America. The system consists of 44 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 215 graduate programs, over 60 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million print volumes, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 29,554 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Scarborough Library invites applications for a creative, skilled person to fill the position of Digital Collections Librarian. This is a permanent status stream position. Reporting to the Coordinator, Collections and cross appointed to Coordinator, Digital Scholarship, the successful candidate will support the creation, design, maintenance, promotion, and stewardship of digital collections. This position will collaborate with internal and external partners in the creation and support of online exhibitions and digital scholarship projects; and assist in improving the access, discovery, usability, and preservation of digital collections. The incumbent manages production workflow, trains and supervises student assistants, oversees digital image production and quality control, creates and reviews metadata, and collaborates with partners.
Responsibilities
* Provides technical support for system architecture, metadata standards, workflows and quality assurance practices
* Supports project planning, management and expertise for digital scholarship projects
* Provides leadership in QA process including training and monitoring of staff members
* Provides consultations in metadata standards and best practices, including the use of specialized tools and software
* Supervises and assigns work to work-study, practicum, and co¬op students assisting with library IT projects; provides functional supervision of library staff as required
* Participates in identifying and establishing funding sources for projects, including collaborating in grant writing application and reporting
* Acts as subject liaison in related subject areas as needed
* Contributes to the digital scholarship community, which may include presenting at academic conferences, developing research for scholarly publication, and participating in open source projects
* Participates in various library and university committees and task forces as appropriate
Required Qualifications
* A degree from an accredited Master's level program in library and information studies
* Strong organizational and analytical skills
* Excellent written and oral communication
* Capacity for working flexibly and creatively in a fast-paced, results-oriented, and dynamic environment
* Knowledge of metadata/cataloging/archival descriptive standards and controlled vocabularies, metadata harvesting and crosswalks, as well as ontologies
* Experience with content/digital asset management systems
* Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative, project-based environment
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse team environments
* Experience with web technologies such as HTML/CSS/XML/JavaScript
* Experience working with project management tools such as Redmine, JIRA and GitHub
* Knowledge of metadata design and manipulation and technologies such as JSON-LD, OpenRefine and Protege
Preferred Qualifications
* Familiarity with web application development languages and tools such as XML/XSLT, PHP, cURL/Shell Script)
* Knowledge of DevOps tools and practices
* Relevant professional experience in an academic library setting
* Fluency in both official languages
Salary and Terms of Appointment
This is a permanent status stream to be hired at the Librarian I/II rank. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
Librarian I - $65,600
Librarian II - $68,400
