Head, Tamiment Library

New York University’s Division of Libraries seeks a qualified individual to direct its Tamiment Library, which includes the Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives, the Ewen Academic Freedom Center and the Center for the United States and the Cold War. The Tamiment Library has one of the finest research collections in the country documenting the history of radical politics: socialism, communism, anarchism, utopian experiments, the cultural left, the New Left, and the struggle for civil rights and civil liberties. Utopian experiments, women's movements, and other forms of radical activity are well-documented in the growing collections. Although the focus of Tamiment holdings is the United States since 1865, Great Britain, Canada and other foreign countries are well-represented in the collections. In addition to extensive union archives, the collections include: the Records of the Communist Party of the United States, the Oral History of the American Left, the Archive of Irish America, the Jewish Labor Committee Archives, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, significant Asian-Pacific-Amercan collections and the personal papers of figures ranging from Eugene V. Debs to James and Esther Jackson and Philip Agee. The Tamiment Library staff includes two full-time librarians, four full-time archivists, two administrative assistants and a staff of full- and part-time project-funded archivists. Its collections include more than 80,000 monographs, over 7,000 non-current periodicals and subscriptions to more than 700 current titles. Its archival holdings include more than 2,000 manuscript collections, a total of more than 15,000 linear feet of original papers and records. The pamphlet and ephemera collection contains more than 500,000 items relating to the left and to the labor movement. Non-print collections include over 1 million photographs, more that 3,000 posters and broadsides and a large video and film collection. Recordings of over 5,200 interviews form the core of an oral history collection that also includes audiotapes of speeches, concerts, conferences, memorial meetings, union meetings and other public and private events. Reporting to the Director, Collections and Research Services, the Head of Tamiment Library will work closely with New York University’s other special collections and with departments across the library system to develop and maintain consistent service and processing standards. The successful candidate will have a strong and well-documented commitment to public service librarianship, a record of teaching and scholarship relevant to the Tamiment Library collections, an understanding of information technology and its implications for libraries and archives, and be prepared to administer a dynamic and complex library, bringing vision and strategic leadership to its mission. In addition to oversight and management of staff, collections and services, duties will include primary responsibility for development of the Tamiment collections and work with in-kind donors, extensive relations with a variety of clientele ranging from students and faculty to a wide array of visiting scholars, significant fund raising, grant writing, and project development. Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent in education and experience; subject masters required for tenure; demonstrated ability in library and/or archives administration, collection development, and building relationships with donors and sponsors; strong communications and interpersonal skills; demonstrated creativity in program and project development; demonstrated commitment to public outreach and service to a diverse user population; and a high degree of facility with technologies and systems germane to the 21st century library. Highly desirable qualifications include subject expertise in the fields relevant to the holdings and scholarship of the Tamiment Library. Candidates with strengths in multiple fields, and with demonstrated leadership in one or more of them, are preferred.
