Research and Instruction Librarian for the Sciences Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, Tulane University Howard-Tilton Memorial Library seeks candidates for the position of Research and Instruction Librarian for the Sciences. The position is responsible for providing research and instruction services to students and faculty in science and engineering disciplines and will work with colleagues in the Center for Librarian User Education (CLUE) to develop and expand its information fluency program. CLUE encourages creative teaching methods and inventive ways of collaborating with faculty to provide students with effective and engaging learning experiences. Within the library, there are opportunities to design services, such as e-science initiatives, and to foster collaborations with departments and students on campus. Tulane University students come from diverse backgrounds from around the United States, are highly academically qualified, and are required to complete service-learning courses to graduate. POSITION SUMMARY The Research and Instruction Librarian for the Sciences is a creative, team-oriented librarian who combines information fluency instruction, research expertise, and outreach with collection development in the sciences or engineering. Reporting to the Head of the Center for Library User Education (CLUE), the librarian collaborates with colleagues to design, deliver and assess information fluency instruction with a focus on student learning. The librarian provides general help and research assistance at the Research Help Desk in the Learning Commons and assists remote patrons through phone, e-mail, web and other technologies; performs collection development for assigned science or engineering subject areas and acts as the library liaison to the academic departments linked to the subject areas; provides in-depth research consultations for science and engineering disciplines; assists with e-science/e-research and data management plans; and assumes other responsibilities as assigned. This position includes some evening and weekend hours. Subject assignments for collection development will be based on the experience and background of the successful candidate. QUALIFICATIONS Required: ALA-accredited MLS; degree or scholarship in a STEM discipline; demonstrated engagement in information fluency instruction with a focus on student learning; knowledge of current trends and best practices in information fluency instruction and assessment; familiarity with ACRL Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education and other learning standards; experience in providing research services in an academic library; experience with research databases used in STEM disciplines; excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to work collaboratively as well as independently; commitment to professional development. Preferred: Degree or scholarship in the life sciences; one year of teaching experience including experience with instructional design, lesson planning, developing instructional materials in print, online, and multi-media formats; familiarity with e-science/e-research and data management plans; participation in ACRL Institute for Information Literacy; experience with collection development in an academic library; reading ability in one or more non-English western languages; experience with emerging technologies.
