The Acquisitions Unit at the University of Oregon Libraries consists of 1.0 FTE librarian, 3.0 FTE classified staff members, and is part of Collection Services. The Collection Services department includes acquisitions, serials, cataloging, processing and preservation. This position supervises 3.0 FTE classified staff members plus student assistants and reports to the Head, Collection Services. Duties & Responsibilities: Provides leadership and expertise in all aspects of the acquisition and receipt of all library resources and acts as the primary resource for monograph acquisitions as well as assisting with other higher-level management activities. Shapes acquisition models and creates workflows to efficiently acquire traditional, evolving and specialized resources. Coordinates and monitors the activities of the monographic acquisitions section. Participates in the creation and management of the collections budget. Provides training and supervision for monographic acquisitions staff members and facilitates communication with extended library colleagues such as serials and subject specialists. Contributes to the advancement of the Libraries’ mission through service on local and national committees, and continuing professional development. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science/studies in hand by Spring or Summer 2013; experience in acquisitions or the publishing trade; familiarity with fund accounting, library budgeting and acquisitions practices; experience working with vendors and content providers; knowledge of trends related to digital acquisitions; ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent technological skills including facility with Microsoft Excel and Access; demonstrated experience handling multiple priorities and/or projects; demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels and with people of diverse backgrounds. Preferred: Two years’ experience in acquisitions or the publishing trade; experience supervising full-time employees and/or student assistants; experience with acquisitions processes in advanced integrated library systems; experience with acquisitions in a consortial environment; familiarity with cataloging principles and procedures; knowledge of collection development principles; reading and writing knowledge of Spanish; demonstrated professional development activity.
