Librarian & Instruction Coordinator for Science & Engineering Library Summary: The Temple University Libraries seek an engaged, creative and enthusiastic librarian / instruction coordinator for our Science & Engineering Library (SEL). SEL is located on the main campus of Temple, a vibrant, urban research university with over 1,700 full-time faculty and a student body of 36,000 that is among the most diverse in the nation. The Science & Engineering Library supports research and instruction in biology, chemistry, computer & information science, earth & environmental science, engineering, the mathematical sciences and physics. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Head of the Science and Engineering Library, the incumbent: • Plans, coordinates and assesses SEL’s instruction and information literacy initiatives in consultation with other librarian educators; works collaboratively with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum; teaches general and subject-specific classes. Creates learning materials and research guides. • Serves as liaison to multiple science and engineering departments; provides a full range of multi-disciplinary reference, research and consultative services for students and faculty; engages in the academic and intellectual life of the departments to appropriately direct, develop and promote library services and collections; integrates current and emerging technologies, as appropriate, in the design and delivery of SEL instruction, outreach and information services; develops collections for liaison subject areas. • The incumbent will participate in library-wide activities and committees, and is expected to be active professionally. S/he also will be expected to meet requirements for contract renewals, promotion, and regular appointment and perform other duties as assigned. • Participates as scheduled in shared evening and weekend service hours. May supervise student assistants or other staff. Required Education and Experience: • ALA accredited MLS/MLIS. Required Skills and Abilities: • Substantial coursework or library experience or practical lab experience in engineering or science fields, such as biology, physics, chemistry, geology, etc. • Well-developed analytical, organizational, management and communication skills. • Demonstrated initiative, creativity and flexibility. • Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment. Preferred Skills and Abilities: • Demonstrated experience in a science or engineering academic setting providing reference, consultation or liaison services. • Demonstrated experience providing instruction and applying information literacy concepts, such as developing learning outcomes and employing assessment techniques, to practice. • Demonstrated facility with instruction and information technologies and creative use of technology to enhance learning. • Demonstrated experience developing and managing science or engineering-related collections in all formats. • Knowledge of the information needs of relevant disciplines and an understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing. • Science or engineering degree.
