Journalism Librarian Columbia University Libraries/Information Services The Columbia University Libraries invites nominations and applications for the position of Journalism Librarian. The Libraries seek an energetic, knowledgeable and technologically adept professional to support research and teaching programs for the faculty, students and staff of the Columbia School of Journalism. This includes research support, instruction and training, and active outreach to faculty and students. The Journalism Librarian manages collection funds and selects materials for the Journalism and Lehman libraries in areas of journalism, news and current events. The Journalism Librarian is also a member of the Social Sciences Division team providing research assistance in the Digital Social Science Center. In addition to knowledge of major news research databases, such as Lexis-Nexis, Factiva and others, the successful candidate will be familiar with data sources and data visualization tools, and will have some experience with R, SPSS or other statistical software. The incumbent will maintain the Journalism Library webpage, http://library.columbia.edu/indiv/jour.html, administer the Journalism blog, Twitter account and other appropriate social media. The Journalism Librarian will engage technologies emerging as critical to research and teaching in Journalism, including those supporting data-intensive research, data visualization, etc. The Journalism Librarian will also support the evolution and enhancement of innovative library services and technology initiatives in virtual environments and on mobile web and social computing platforms. This position will report to the Director of the Social Sciences Libraries Division. The successful candidate will have: • An MLS or PhD or equivalent combination of education and experience • Public service experience in an academic library, including research support, instruction or collection development. • Ability to work independently with varied user groups in a complex organization and function collaboratively in a rapidly changing team environment. • Demonstrated public service orientation and knowledge of user needs for teaching, learning, and research. • Excellent analytical, organizational, oral and written communications, and interpersonal skills. • Experience in webpage creation, and demonstrated ability to communicate/publish for the web/social media. • Experience providing service in a technology-based environment • Demonstrated experience working with statistical datasets and the ability to effectively communicate with faculty, students and staff about textural, numerical and spatial data resources. • Knowledgeable in the issues surrounding scholarly communications and data management planning. Also highly desirable: • Demonstrated experience using quantitative research tools such as SPSS, Stata, etc. • Demonstrated experience using qualitative research tools such as NVivio or Atlas.ti • Demonstrated experience working with R or other coding language. • Familiarity with visualization technologies • Experience in identifying and evaluating software applications One of the world's leading research universities, Columbia provides outstanding opportunities to work and grow in a unique intellectual community.
