THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA LIBRARIES Department Head, Gorgas Information Services RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a creative, innovative and experienced librarian to lead the instructional and information services program in Gorgas Library, the main social sciences and humanities library on campus. The candidate will possess the vision and leadership skills necessary to develop a user-focused instructional and teaching program for the 21st century. Evaluation of current programs and development of new programs will be expected as well as marketing programs and services to the campus community. Must possess an understanding of pedagogy and the ability support and develop training in new methods of delivering instruction. Ability to develop web based instruction. Must possess the ability to develop benchmarks to provide assessment for instructional program and be able to assess programs. Additional responsibilities include: • Leading a team of 9 librarians and one staff member in Gorgas Library. • Developing, implementing and assessing innovative reference, instruction and outreach programs and services for the social sciences and humanities in support of learning, teaching and research. • Collaborating with branch libraries on instructional programs and services. • Developing relationships with faculty and staff to strengthen instructional and teaching programs and to foster collaboration on campus. • Working with the Associate Dean for Research & Instruction to develop and facilitate a program of innovative 21st century services and programs that are responsive to the University’s priorities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS/MILS degree from an ALA accredited program. Additional graduate degree preferred. At least five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research library. Demonstrated leadership of teams and with innovative use of resources and emerging technologies; knowledge of issues and trends in reference and instruction services; understanding of instruction and teaching design; demonstrated teaching skills; demonstrated experience managing, supervising and motivating faculty; ability to facilitate change; effective oral, written and interpersonal skills; record of scholarship and professional service. ENVIRONMENT: The University Libraries maintains membership in the Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, the Center for Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, LYRASIS, and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries.
