The Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML) of Columbia University seeks qualified applicants for the position of Lehman Curator for American History. Reporting to the Director of the RBML, the Lehman Curator is responsible for: - Developing and managing primary source collections in American History; - Outreach, instruction, and public programming relating to American History; - Preparing reference guides, collection descriptions, and overviews of primary source holdings in American History; - Curating exhibitions in the RBML and for the web; - Serving as RBML liaison with the Lehman Center for American History. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library (RBML) is Columbia's principal repository for primary source collections. The holdings of the RBML span more than 4,000 years and comprise rare printed works, cylinder seals, cuneiform tablets, papyri, and Coptic ostraca; medieval and renaissance manuscripts; as well as art and realia. The RBML contains some 500,000 printed books and 44,000 linear feet of manuscripts, personal papers, and records. Collection strengths include the history of publishing and printing, graphic arts, banking and finance, human rights, the Russian diaspora, and the performing arts. Its holding in literature include the papers of Hart Crane, Herman Wouk, Tennessee Williams, the Beats, Amiri Baraka, Bennett Cerf, Barney Rossett, and others, as well as the records of Random House, Harper & Bros., and many others.The RBML also houses the Columbia Center for Oral History and the Papers of John Jay.
