The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seek applications and nominations for the position of Coal and Coke Heritage Center Archivist. Under the direction of the Eberly Family Special Collections Library at University Park, the person appointed to this two year, fixed term faculty position will arrange, describe, manage, and make accessible the collections held by the Coal and Coke Heritage Center on the Eberly Campus in Lemont Furnace, PA. Started in 1977 as the Coal and Coke Heritage project by Penn State Fayette faculty, the Coal and Coke Heritage Center has been involved with the ongoing preservation, research, teaching, and community outreach activities focuses on the coal/coke industries of southwestern Pennsylvania. In addition to creating over 1,000 oral history interviews, the CCHC has collected over 128 linear feet of archival and more 1,500 maps and drawings. The CCHC collections are housed and accessed in the Fayette Library. Responsibilities Accessions, arranges, describes, and creates finding aids for all CCHC archival and manuscript collections in compliance with local and national processing standards as set by the UP Special Collections Library staff. Works with CCHC staff and the Head of the Special Collections Library to establish priorities and deadlines for processing projects. Works with the UP Special Collections Cataloging Team to provide/update collection level information in the University Libraries’ catalog. Performs regular reporting of metrics for processing projects. Works in cooperation with Fayette Campus Library staff, CCHC staff and volunteers, and the UP Special Collections Library to develop an ongoing collections management plan for the Center. Provides reference service and outreach to faculty, students, the community, and other researchers for CCHC collections. Supervises part-time, volunteer staff, and docents at the CCHC Completes other special projects as assigned/directed. Participates in local, regional, or national professional organizations; enrich professional expertise by attending conferences and continuing education opportunities. Qualifications Required: Minimum qualifications are a MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent), or a Masters in Information Science, Archival Science, or related field. Experience with arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections. Working knowledge of archival and descriptive standards, including DACS, EAD, MARC, LCSH, and Dublin Core. Knowledge of basic preservation standards for archival and manuscript collections. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Excellent technical skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, cataloging systems, and EAD authoring tools. Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a collegial environment. Desirable: Project management experience Experience using the Archivist's Toolkit Knowledge of XSLT and EAD stylesheet authoring Experience with oral history and industry-related archival collections Familiarity with Southwestern Pennsylvania history and the Connellsville Coke Region Environment: Penn State, a land-grant institution, is a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago. Penn State Fayette is a commuter campus with approximately 1100 students; about 35 percent of which are adult students. The campus offers 4 bachelor’s degrees, 9 associate degrees, and the first 2 years of over 160 Penn State undergraduate degree programs.
