JOB SUMMARY The University of Florida Libraries seeks a creative and service-oriented librarian for the physical sciences (including physics, astronomy, mathematics and statistics) in the Marston Science Library. This position is a tenure track library faculty position which provides reference assistance, instruction, outreach, and collection management for physics and related physical science fields. A key element of the assignment is the use of new technology to access and deliver information to library patrons. This librarian works constructively in group efforts and maintains close working relationships with faculty, students and colleagues. This position is responsible for coordinating instruction programs using traditional classroom methods and educational technologies. The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and, consequently, the Physics Librarian will be asked to serve on various committees and teams. To support all students and faculty and foster excellence in a diverse and global society, the Physics Librarian will be expected to include individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in work activities. The incumbent will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion. RESPONSIBILITIES • Provides reference services for faculty, students and staff of the University of Florida, including traditional reference desk service, online reference, and email reference services. • Participates in the Marston Science Library collection management program, specifically in the assigned fields. Works with faculty in selecting and evaluating materials to support their academic and research programs. • Coordinates instruction programs for the Marston Science Library faculty using traditional classroom methods and educational technologies. • Actively participates in the development, selection and evaluation of web resources for subject guides and other patron services. Develops and maintains web-based tutorials. • Participates in planning, policy formation and departmental decision making related to science services, collections and new technologies. • Serves as a resource on issues related to data management, data visualization and related digital initiatives. • Contributes to the Libraries, the University, and the profession through substantive involvement in scholarship and service activities. QUALIFICATIONS Required: • Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school or an advanced degree in a relevant academic field. • Experience serving physical sciences academic populations/fields. • Knowledge of scientific and database resources. • Strong commitment to user-focused service. • Demonstrated knowledge of and enthusiasm for the integration of new technologies into the delivery of information services. • Experience or familiarity with web-based instructional tools. • Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a culturally diverse patron community. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex, rapidly changing academic environment. • Strong potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion (outlined at http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/pers/cdh). Preferred: • Experience working in an academic library that serves scientists. • Advanced degree in a relevant academic field. • Experience with or demonstrated enthusiasm for working with the public. • Experience with or demonstrated enthusiasm for instruction. • Interest in or knowledge of data management initiatives. • Record of including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in research, teaching, service and other work.
