LIAISON LIBRARIAN Nahum Gelber Law Library Appointment: Tenure track Assistant or Associate Librarian depending upon experience Duration: Initial three-year appointment with possibility for renewal Salary: Commensurate with experience The McGill Library seeks an innovative, autonomous and resourceful librarian to provide resources and services to support primarily the teaching and research programs of the Faculty of Law and several Institutes and Research Centers. THE McGILL LIBRARY The Library is committed to the delivery of innovative information products, services and programs of the highest quality focused on client needs and supportive of the University's strategic mission and directions. The Library proactively supports the teaching, learning and research needs of faculty and students to ensure that the university’s strategic mission of excellence as a research intensive, student-centred university is satisfied. Collection building is based upon the premise of preference for electronic versions. McGill Library has the largest collection in Quebec and is one of Canada’s largest academic libraries with access to over 6 million monographs and 80,000 online serials and databases. The library is a member of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Conférence des recteurs et principaux des universités du Québec (CRÉPUQ), the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and is the first Canadian member of the HathiTrust Digital Library. As a tenured stream appointee, the successful candidate is expected to devote himself to the full range of academic duties as defined in the Regulations Relating to the Employment of Librarian Staff (www.mcgill.ca/secretariat/policies/academic/). Evening and weekend work may be required. DUTY STATEMENT Primary Purpose of Position To assist in the provision of a range of library and information services and collections to support teaching, learning, research and outreach activities at McGill University. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Advise clients on discovering, accessing and using effectively the full range of library and information resources available to meet teaching, learning and research needs in a specific disciplinary area • Provide to on-site and remote clients assistance and consultation services in information resource discovery and access in relation to specific teaching, learning or research needs • Develop and maintain communication links and appropriate liaison with designated academic departments and/or university centres to ensure library and information needs are understood and met • Co-ordinate the work of other library staff in designated areas and work effectively as a member of a team • Conduct information literacy/skills classes and training programs for clients and library staff • Develop, produce and maintain library documentation, including web content • Assist in the development of the Library's collection in all formats, including print, electronic and multimedia in a specific disciplinary area to ensure teaching, learning and research needs are met • Promote and market the Library’s products and services and assist in fundraising activities as appropriate • Create and maintain library system and database records • Provide intellectual and physical access to library material, particularly subject and authority analysis and metadata tags. • Assist in managing the acquisition, delivery and supply of library and information resources • Apply expertise in databases, indexing, metadata and information analysis and synthesis to improve information retrieval and use • Work in partnership with other library and University staff and sections, as well as external groups, on specific projects • Attend various library, faculty and University wide committees and represent the library on external committees as required • Maintain current awareness of emerging technologies and developments in the library, education and information environments and develop possible responses. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP The Liaison Librarian reports to the Head Librarian of Nahum Gelber Law Library. SELECTION CRITERIA 1. Law degree and ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. 2. Member of the Barreau du Québec an asset. 3. 3 to 5 years of experience in creating, organizing, and managing digital collections in an academic library setting. 4. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, define and manage multiple large, complex technology projects. 5. Knowledge of current technologies, standards and practices in digitization and in preservation of digital collections, including knowledge of contingency plans against threats to the digital collections such as industry changes to file formats, natural disaster and security breaches. 6. Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property issues as it relates to digital assets. 7. Experience using and supporting numerous types of digital imaging equipment including flatbed scanners and digital cameras. 8. Experience in using objective and subjective quality control assessments. 9. Demonstrated experience in supervising staff and developing workflows. 10. Experience in articulating vision and goals and developing services to clients. 11. Creative and analytical thinking skills and good problem solving ability. 12. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Working knowledge of French. 13. High level of professionalism and commitment to the organization and its mission and the ability to work flexibly in a changing environment. 14. Proven ability to promote the Library and its services to clients and present a positive image of the library to clients. 15. Ability to understand and respond to priorities and trends in the Library and University environments. 16.
