METADATA/CATALOG LIBRARIAN (Clinical Assistant /Associate Professor) University of Illinois at Chicago The University Library of the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks an energetic and knowledgeable librarian to provide metadata and cataloging expertise. The Metadata/Catalog Librarian will supply guidance in creating, reviewing and editing metadata for digital and other collections and born-digital content in the library. The position will work with colleagues within the Resource Acquisition and Management (RAM) Department and throughout the library and also may serve as a consultant and metadata expert to assist in the metadata needs of projects throughout campus. The Metadata/Catalog Librarian will contribute to the access of library materials through managing batch loading of records and providing original cataloging for library materials. The successful candidate will take part in managing overall department operations. This is a clinical faculty position with research and publication expectations. The University of Illinois at Chicago is a Carnegie RU/VH institution located near the Chicago Loop, with a student enrollment of 27,000 and offering doctoral degrees in 60 areas and master’s degrees in nearly 80. The Library is part of the statewide CARLI consortial integrated library system. The RAM Department provides cataloging, acquisitions, serials, and electronic resources management services to all sites of the UIC Library, including the Richard M. Daley Library and the four Libraries of the Health Sciences. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide library-wide leadership relating to metadata production for description, access, administration and preservation of materials • Develop workflows and train library personnel in non-MARC metadata creation and maintenance • Develop systems to ensure the quality and consistency of metadata in core library systems, including authority control and management of controlled vocabularies • Transform and integrate metadata from diverse sources, using tools and standards such as OAI-PMH, MarcEdit, XSLT, and the Digital Collection Gateway • Serve as metadata consultant to projects around campus, including working with library and campus groups to implement metadata standards, providing tutorials and workshops, and assisting researchers with data management • Manage batch loading of records into library catalog database and other locations • Perform original and complex copy cataloging and assist with database maintenance activities • Serve as part of departmental faculty leadership team MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association • Two years of professional library experience or equivalent professional experience • Experience working with MARC and non-MARC metadata in library settings • Experience with XML-based standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, or others • Knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards, classification schemes, and subject headings • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, staff, and users • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills contributing to a collaborative environment • Keen analytical and problem-solving skills • Evidence of ability to meet University standards in publication and professional service commensurate with appointment as a clinical faculty member. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS • Experience with the XSLT language • Experience with ContentDM, DSpace, or other digital collection management systems • Experience managing large data sets and developing data management plans • Knowledge of linked data and semantic web concepts and related technologies • Experience in a large academic library • Experience using the Voyager integrated library system SALARY/RANK/CONTRACT: Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications and experience.
