Position description
The University of Toronto Libraries seeks an innovative and service-minded individual to collaborate with librarians, faculty and other university partners to initiate, sustain and assess the Libraries’ support of student learning in undergraduate courses, with a focus on early-stage undergraduates.
Reporting to the Head, Faculty & Student Engagement , the Student Engagement Librarian will develop and coordinate scalable library initiatives related to student engagement, information literacy, learning and orientation for undergraduate students, with an emphasis on information literacy skill-building of early-stage undergraduates and transfer students. The incumbent will help shape new directions for initiatives that support student learning and provide library services where students expect to find them. He/she will continue rollout of the library’s successful Personal Librarian project: https://personal.library.utoronto.ca/
The successful candidate will cultivate positive, interactive relationships with other Library departments; provide advice and support to liaison librarians; engage in partnerships with academic support units, departments, and student associations, and use these partnerships to develop a service agenda that supports and encourages undergraduate student achievement and lifelong learning. An important aspect of this position will be to maintain current knowledge and awareness of emerging trends in undergraduate student engagement.
Required Qualifications:
•ALA Accredited Master of Library or Information Science or equivalent
•Experience working with early-stage undergraduates
•Experience providing research assistance to library users
•Proven ability to reach out and build successful relationships with instructors and other campus stakeholders to promote library initiatives
•Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues and strategic partners
•Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
•Highly developed listening skills
•Proven ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
•Familiarity with information literacy theory, practice and assessment.
•Demonstrated knowledge of trends, methods and best practices in undergraduate student engagement
•Ability to manage workflow, projects, and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a complex and rapidly changing environment
•Flexibility and adaptability to solve problems in a decentralized library and university structure
•Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth
•Proven ability to use a variety of technological applications both in and beyond the classroom context
•Proficiency in the use of general and subject-specific print and electronic reference resources
•Demonstrated skills in designing and creating effective learning materials, such as online tutorials and research guides
•Knowledge of basic web development tools (e.g.Libguides, HTML, content management systems, screencasting software)
Preferred Qualifications:
•An undergraduate or graduate degree in a related discipline
•Academic library experience with reference assistance and library instruction
•Experience planning, implementing and promoting services or programs to large numbers of users
•At least two years professional experience as a librarian
•Demonstrated experience with project management
•Familiarity with online learning management software and tools e.g. Blackboard
•Experience supporting online learning, including teaching in an online environment
•Knowledge of information literacy standards
•Knowledge of the library’s organizational structure at the University of Toronto
Responsibilities
•Recommend, plan, implement, and assess library initiatives to support undergraduate students, with a focus on early-stage undergraduates
•Manage all aspects of the Library’s Personal Librarian pilot program
•Investigate and recommend scalable solutions to develop information literacy skills of first year students across the University
•Advocate for and make connections to ensure appropriate librarian support of research-intensive undergraduate courses for early-stage undergraduates
•Engage proactively in outreach and development of partnerships to support undergraduate student learning and to establish positive connections between the U of T Libraries and undergraduate students
•Coordinate the provision of open library workshops targeted at early stage undergraduates
•Participate in library instructional activities and workshops
•Develop, implement and assess information literacy initiatives, including instruction, both in-class and online
•Support and advise U of T library staff and administrators in the provision and assessment of undergraduate student initiatives
•Identify opportunities to inject library participation in first-year programming campus-wide, including orientation activities and welcome events to transfer students
•The incumbent may also assume liaison librarian duties for one or more subject areas.
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
Experience and qualifications determine salary and appointment level. This is a permanent status stream position.
Librarian I: $58,100
Librarian II: $60,700
