The job location for this position is at: 4040 NE 49th Avenue (RTS – Job Corps Route 24) JOB SUMMARY: The University of Florida Libraries seeks a versatile and energetic Digital Production Manager responsible for strategically managing staff capacities, multiple fund lines and project timelines, and the specialized equipment and resources for the operations of the Digital Library Center (DLC). The Digital Production Manager has oversight of projects and staff in the areas of bibliographic control, imaging/post-capture processing, quality control & structural metadata, audiovisual conversion/formatting, and optical character recognition/metadata enhancement/archiving. Makes project level decisions in collaboration with the Head of Digital Services, and works closely with external and internal clients to ensure an appropriate flow of materials. Manages digitization processes and services and advises customers on technical specifications. This position encompasses both technical and managerial roles and responsibilities. RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages the Digital Library Center production units, consisting of Ingest; Imaging; Audiovisual; Quality Control; Metadata, Markup, Loading, and Archiving. • Establishes, maintains, and assesses overall production workflow; • Maintains accurate tracking and inventory for production and pending queues; • Advises the Head of Digital Services and project administrators concerning progress toward overall project goals and relevant day-to-day operations (scheduling, hardware/software needs and failures, etc.) via formal reports and informal communication; • Identifies risks and analyzes capacity; • Consults on the development of grant proposals and in the administration of awarded projects; • Manages budgets by tracking and assuring available funding levels for continuous operation, including multiple grant funded projects; • Works with DLC staff to develop cost-effective and quality-control techniques for digitization; • In collaboration with Imaging Supervisor, works with IT, vendors, and others to ensure optimal functioning of hardware and software and to recommend methods, hardware, and software for improved operational efficiency and new opportunities. Supervises staff • Prioritizes and assigns projects to 6 or 7 direct reports and additional temporary staff and student workers; • Provides technical training; • Monitors productivity. Supports digital production needs of UF Institutional Repository (UF IR), such as ingest and digital preservation of electronic theses and dissertations, self-submittals, and integration of UF content digitized by Internet Archive. • Coordinates with IR manager and provides technical support as needed; • Coordinates with Vended Scanning Coordinator for successful integration of externally digitized content. Liaises with UF Libraries subject specialists and other library and museum locations for digitization and, as necessary, with the Florida Virtual Library Center for the deployment and/or archiving of resources created. • Advises on technical aspects and provides budget estimates for proposed digitization projects, especially grant funded work; • Communicates status of projects in progress; • Prepares and conducts onsite and internal presentations on the digitization process. Professional Development • Keeps current with national developments in imaging with digital planetary, audio, video, and multimedia devices; • Researches topics related to digital imaging, indexing, metadata, etc. particularly related to the standardization and use of planetary and multi-media devices and makes recommendations; • Ensures effective training for DLC, Libraries, and partner institutions in the creation, manipulation and uses of digitization equipment, software, and digital files. Serves on committees and performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience. Preferred: • Master’s degree and three years of related library experience; or bachelor’s degree and six years of related library experience; • Experience with analog and digital imaging equipment, e.g., flat-bed scanners and high resolution analog and digital cameras; and high-speed rotary scanners, slide and microfilm scanners, etc.; • Extensive experience related to imaging, graphics, audiovisual formats; • Successful supervisory experience, especially the ability to provide leadership to professional and paraprofessional staff with highly technical duties in a collegial manner in a constantly changing environment; • Successful project management experience coordinating large collaborative projects with internal and external partners; • Successful budget management experience; • Effective oral and written communication skills; • Ability to collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) on development of proposals and in the administration of awarded projects; • Experience with sponsored research projects; • Experience working with special and/or archival collections in an academic or research environment; • Experience in teaching and training digital technologies as it relates to training staff and giving presentations on the digitization process to internal and external partners; • Experience in digitizing research materials (e.g., books, maps, artifacts, specimens, etc.); • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, administrators and the general public; • Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a complex, rapidly changing academic environment; • Effective decision-making skills; • Demonstrated attention to detail; • Experience manipulating and processing digital images; • Experience in audio, video and synchronized multimedia formats.
