Maryland ranks 39th among the 115 member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries and has an operating budget of $23.7 million. The University of Maryland (UMD) Libraries seeks a proactive, dynamic and visionary Associate Dean for Collections to provide leadership for collection development, special collections and collection services supporting the teaching and research missions of the University. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean for Collections is an active member of the Libraries’ senior administrative team. This position requires a substantial background in academic library collection development and related support services. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills and a strategic vision for the future of academic library collections. The successful candidate will be an experienced and creative librarian with proven experience in developing library collections and innovative services that support the rapidly changing environment of the twenty-first century research university. The Associate Dean will collaborate across the Libraries, the University and consortial partners to inform the selection, acquisition, discovery and use of collections; will be knowledgeable about current and emerging library, publishing and scholarly information trends and practices; and will articulate a vision to leverage this knowledge in order to have a positive effect on the University. Duties and Responsibilities The Associate Dean for Collections provides leadership for, strategic planning, assessment and operations for library collections. The Associate Dean for Collections creates and implements policies and strategies for collection development and other collections services in collaboration with the Libraries’ administrative team, including acquisition, licensing, discovery, preservation, scholarly communications, access and storage of collections in all formats and media. The Associate Dean establishes relationships and works closely with library consortia, vendors and other partners to provide the University of Maryland with access to the highest quality research information in support of the University’s curricular and research needs. The Associate Dean promotes use of the Libraries’ collections in all formats and media to the University of Maryland and the greater community of scholars. Required • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited program; or equivalent graduate degree from a foreign institution; or an advanced degree with significant library management experience. • Minimum of seven years’ increasingly responsible professional experience in a large academic or research library, at least five of which must be at the managerial level. • Minimum of five years’ experience in developing and assessing academic library collections in all formats and media and in direct collaboration with academic departments and programs, faculty, students and other researchers. • Awareness of current and emerging trends in collection development, collection services, publishing, scholarly communication and information technology that affect research collections and related services. • Experience with managing large collections budgets. • Proven commitment to excellent user services. • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and assess strategic priorities that direct resources toward the University’s research and teaching enterprise. • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a large and diverse research institution. • Demonstrated outstanding communication, organizational, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Preferred • Additional graduate degree in academic or professional discipline. • Scholarly record of research and publication to permit appointment as faculty with permanent status at the rank of Librarian IV. • Outstanding record of service in appropriate professional associations. • National reputation in academic library collection development and related services. • Proven experience in collections project management and in working with academic publishers and vendors. • Successful development or grants experience.
