Associate Director for Research and EducationThe Ohio State University Libraries is transforming the role information professionals play in knowledge building and in augmenting the ground breaking research taking place at one of the world’s most prominent research universities. We seek a knowledgeable, dynamic, results-oriented leader to direct, develop, enhance, and implement an evolving portfolio of research, teaching, and learning services that support the University’s efforts to transform scholarship and solve problems of worldwide significance. The Associate Director for Research and Education creates a shared vision for and advances tactical implementation of a relevant suite of programs and services to enhance information literacy, scholarly research, liaison partnerships, outreach, and targeted assessment. Reporting to the Vice Provost and Director of University Libraries, the Associate Director sets priorities, provides structure for collaboration, and strategically advances library initiatives that align with the mission and innovative direction of the University. The incumbent will join a strong, energetic, change-oriented Executive Committee focused on organizational development, innovation, strategic alignment and constituent’s needs.Connections that Revolutionize ScholarshipThe Research and Education Division leads the Libraries in creating new, engagement-centered service models based in cross-university partnerships, user-oriented assessment, and long-standing success in advancing information literacy. The Associate Director inspires, guides and enables the work of approximately 27 faculty and 34 staff in Research Services, Teaching and Learning, Outreach and Engagement, and Assessment, as well as the branch libraries: 18th Avenue Library, Architecture, Biological Sciences/Pharmacy, Fine Arts, Geology, Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. This position also serves as liaison for the University’s five regional campus libraries, which are separately administered. In a highly collaborative environment, the Associate Director works with a wide variety of campus partners including faculty, academic support services, student life units, and learning technologists to enrich the student experience and increase faculty productivity. Placing Librarians in Critical Workflows: Current Initiatives• Advance continuous change in the role of liaison librarians as key partners in the research enterprise and in redesigning curricula as scholarship evolves. • Extend the existing engaged librarian model to more intensely support the University’s growth in the Discovery Theme areas: Health and Wellness, Energy and the Environment, Food Safety and Security. • Evaluate liaison distribution in the context of changing University programs.• Through partnerships and skill building, define and assemble relevant services to offer through the new Research Commons.• Cultivate success for a newly hired cohort of librarians with expertise in business, fine arts, architecture, GIS/Geology, data services and digital humanities. • Foster the University’s efforts to ensure early and continued student achievement through librarian participation in the First Year Experience and Second-year Transformational Experience programs. • Contribute significantly to the University’s expansion of online education programs in close cooperation with the Office of Distance Education and eLearning.• Develop strategic approaches for keeping pace with constituency needs through targeted assessment, user-focused innovation, and improving user experience.• Align purposeful outreach and programming with university-wide conversations.• Enhance the branch libraries’ contribution to their constituencies’ success including guiding renovations in the FAES Student Success Center and the 18th Avenue Library (open 24/7).As a faculty librarian in the University Libraries, the Associate Director demonstrates in-depth knowledge of trends and emerging solutions in areas relevant to research and education services. She/he engages in national and consortial dialog in this area and seeks mutually beneficial collaborations with peer institutions. He/she will also contribute to developments in the field of public services through active professional engagement, research, presenting and publishing in appropriate venues. About YouRequired Qualifications:• Masters degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent degree).• Demonstrated success in system-wide planning, oversight and administration in academic/research libraries, including effective leadership, supervisory and budgetary skills.• Knowledge and understanding of the evolving role of research libraries, specifically of significant trends and issues in research and educational services, including effective uses of technology in support of service innovation.• Ability to inspire, build trust, lead organizational change, empower professional growth and engage faculty and staff in delivering user-centered services. • Evidence of excellent working relationships with faculty, students, library staff, and with partners across an institution.• Excellent interpersonal, oral, written and collaboration skills for communicating complex issues and perspectives to a wide range of constituencies.• A strong vision for the future of library reference, research and teaching services and partnerships. Preferred Qualifications:• Record of research, publication, and scholarly achievement sufficient to warrant appointment with tenure at the Associate Professor level.• National or international reputation in the field of public services librarianship.• Demonstrated successful and progressively responsible experience developing, managing and assessing user-focused services in an academic or research library.About the AppointmentThis is a full-time, permanent, 12-month tenure-track faculty position.
