The University of Illinois at Chicago, a Carnegie RU/VH institution located near the Chicago Loop, with a student enrollment of 27,000 and offering doctoral degrees in 60 areas and master’s degrees in nearly 80, seeks a talented and innovative librarian to head its newly formed Research Services & Resources Department. This is a tenure-system faculty position with research and publication expectations. The Department: The Research Services & Resources Department (RSR) combines most of the operations of previously separate Reference and Collections Development Departments. It advances our transition to the liaison librarian model while maintaining focus on providing excellent reference and instruction service and building distinguished collections in a user-centered environment. RSR is a department of the Richard J. Daley Library, which serves all of the UIC colleges and departments except those in the health sciences. The Research Services & Resources Librarian reports to the Associate University Librarian. The department consists of 11.8 FTE faculty members, two Resident Librarians, two civil service staff, and a number of student employees. The RSR Librarian will develop the year-old liaison librarian program to promote excellence in all of its aspects: • Effective communication with assigned colleges or departments • Excellent reference service • User focused course–related instruction • Collections development in support of research, teaching, and learning • Partnering in E-scholarship efforts • Fostering effective scholarly communication We seek a leader who can work productively with library colleagues, help RSR faculty effectively integrate and perform their liaison responsibilities, and foster vital conversations and engagement with faculty outside the library, administrative units that promote student success, and a diverse student body. Responsibilities: • Lead the new department in establishing its identity and creating a clear vision for the services offered by Research Services & Resources. • Develop and implement priorities, goals, and long-term planning in consultation with department and library faculty and staff. • Oversee the reference services of the Daley Library, including reference desk service in the IDEA Commons, online services, research consultations, development of research guides, and other activities. • Work with the Coordinator of Library Instruction (a member of the department), the Collections Coordinator, and the Scholarly Communications Librarian to initiate and pursue opportunities in those arenas. • Actively promote Research Services & Resources to the campus and the scholarly and public communities. • Participate in and lead assessment activities that help to improve services. • Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments. • Foster and contribute to existing and new collaborations with partners in consortia and with Chicago academic and cultural institutions. • Contribute to and participate in the overall mission of the library. • Cultivate external relationships with University faculty to assess needs, develop and deliver value-added services, and promote collaborations. • As a tenure-system faculty member, exhibit continued progress toward the library’s norms, expectations and standards of excellence in research and scholarship. • Foster the success of department faculty in research, service, librarianship, and teaching. Minimum Qualifications: • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school program. • Five years progressively responsible experience working in reference and/or collections development in a university setting. • Outstanding reference and collections development skills that are devoted to improving the user experience. • Understanding of emerging trends in reference and collections development, and in academic librarianship as a whole. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, staff, and users. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills contributing to a collaborative environment that empowers others to excel. • Evidence of ability to meet University standards in publication and professional service commensurate with appointment as a tenure-system faculty member. Rank is dependent on the candidate’s record of scholarship. Additional Desirable Qualifications: • Experience working with and serving a large and diverse clientele in a public research university. • Experience executing user-centered projects that improved services. • Understanding of information technology and the opportunities it presents to enhance user service. • A second advanced degree. Salary/Rank/Contract: Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications and experience; twelve month appointment with 24 days vacation; 12 annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; paid medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required; physical examination at University Health Service is required upon appointment.
