Associate University Librarian for Publishing

The University of Michigan Library seeks a forward-thinking, mission-driven leader for the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Publishing and Director, University of Michigan Press. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, and in collaboration with the library's leadership team, the AUL for Publishing will lead our unique library-based publishing enterprise, which comprises a broad range of print and online publications and publishing services, and whose premier imprint is the University of Michigan Press. We are searching for a leader who views our publishing activity as integral to the library and its mission, all of which operate within the context of a world-class research university. Our new AUL for Publishing will have a deep understanding of the rapidly changing landscape of scholarship and scholarly publishing, and a commitment to exploration and experimentation to fulfill our mission to publish, disseminate, and preserve the scholarly conversation in an expansive variety of formats and modes. Responsibilities The AUL for Publishing will lead 50 talented staff members in seven units: Editorial, Marketing and Outreach, Publishing Production and Fulfillment, Publishing Technology, Administrative Services, Copyright, and Deep Blue (U-M's institutional repository). Toward the shared goal of ensuring that the benefits of scholarship accrue to everyone, these units publish scholarly and educational materials in a range of formats for wide dissemination and permanent preservation; develop digital publishing models as portals for knowledge sharing; create permanently accessible faculty publications and related materials; host and publish online, open access journals; consult and educate the campus about publishing and copyright; reissue faculty publications and collections materials as reprints and electronic editions; and advocate for the broadest possible access to scholarship everywhere. Required Qualifications • Strong combination of academic credentials and experience related to the position; • Demonstrated successful managerial and administrative experience in publishing, higher education, or the non-profit sector; • Demonstrated capacity to articulate a vision and strategy for publishing in an academic library; • Knowledge of current issues and trends in academic publishing, scholarly communication, open access, data sharing, and intellectual property and copyright, including fair use; • Knowledge of publishing industry practices; • Ability to thrive in a rapidly changing environment; • Record of successful budget management; • Appreciation for the importance of diversity in the workplace and the ability to flourish in a culture that values diversity of thought and backgrounds; • Demonstrated success participating in a highly collaborative environment. Desired Qualifications • Demonstrated understanding of the mission and functions of a large research library; • Demonstrated leadership in the establishment and maintenance of work processes, procedures, and project management routines at the departmental level; • Record of successful grant management.
