Working Title: Health and Biosciences Librarian Faculty Rank: Lecturer Position Summary: The University Libraries at Virginia Tech seeks a service-oriented, innovative, and self-motivated librarian to serve as the Health and Biosciences Librarian, with liaison responsibilities to the departments of Biology, Psychology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering and Science, Medicine, and Public Health, and to the research institutes of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. The incumbent will join the SciTech Team of librarians in planning and delivering services and programs in an environment of increasing collaboration with collegiate faculty and expansion of library services to the academic community. Core responsibilities include: Providing research assistance and consultations, instructional sessions, and offering a wide array of research support services Identifying, evaluating, and providing access to information sources useful in supporting the missions of assigned departments and areas Creating and maintaining online guides and other research resources for assigned disciplines Serving as a resource on issues related to data management, scholarly communication, and metrics used to measure research impact Raising awareness among faculty and students of scholarly communication issues and their rights as authors Supporting open researcher networking platforms such as VIVO Promoting use of the Libraries’ repository, publishing, and data services and identifying collections for the repository Collaborating with faculty and students to ascertain changes to the research landscape and resources necessary to support degree requirements for existing and forthcoming academic programs Building and managing library collections in the assigned areas of Biology, Psychology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering and Science, Medicine, and Public Health through selection and de-selection of monographs, selective recommendation of new journals and databases, and review of current serial subscriptions. Required Qualifications: M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited graduate program, or equivalent; BS. in a science discipline; bibliographic instruction and reference experience with undergraduates, graduate students and faculty; broad Knowledge of science research resources; knowledge and ability to perform collection development and management in the areas of biology, psychology, biochemistry, medicine, and public health; understanding of current trends in academic scholarship. Ability to work with researchers and patrons in sustaining today’s evolving digital service environments, ensuring the quality, integrity, and curation of digital research information. Knowledge and ability to cultivate collaborative facilities that engender opportunities to connect with, and consult on data practices. Employment Conditions: Must have a criminal background check.
