Subject Liaison for History

The librarian provides a full range of library services and serves as subject liaison the department of History. As subject liaison s/he articulates, anticipates, and meets the research and curricular needs in the area of concentration. S/he provides classroom instruction in the use of library resources develops and manages collections and provides general and consultative reference services, including participation in the on-call reference rotation. S/he creates subject specific content for the library's web site and employs new technologies in instructional sessions. In providing services and developing collections, the librarian collaborates with other liaisons to meet interdisciplinary needs. The librarian represents the library in national and regional organizations and in outreach activities. The history department is one of the largest subject liaison responsibilities in the Central Library, however secondary subject liaison assignments are typical for liaisons, and these may vary as the strengths available in the team change over time.All professional staff are expected to participate on library committees or other library strategic initiatives as an integral component of their responsibilities. These may vary in number and scope over time, but these are not add-ons or distractions from primary responsibilities, they are a substantive portion of the job responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will bring a combination of expertise and experience from both the academic discipline and library/information sciences. A graduate degree is expected, whether that is an advanced degree in history with library experience; an MLIS with undergraduate degree in history, or a combination of relevant library and academic experience. At least two years of related professional experience is required, preferably with experience in teaching, outreach and/or experience in meeting the research needs of students and faculty in history. The ability to work in a highly collaborative setting, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to service are expected. A wide range of computer and technology skills are now required for library professionals, facility with the technologies of digital humanities and current trends in library technology are required. Ability to work with a variety of departments across the university and the libraries is important. Discipline appropriate language skills are preferred.ENVIRONMENT: This is an exciting time to be at Vanderbilt University.
