POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT HEAD OF REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION SIU CARBONDALE LIBRARY AFFAIRS Appointment: Associate Professor, full-time, 12 month, continuing, Tenure-Track Available: January 1, 2014 Environment: Library Affairs provides comprehensive library services to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale population of 18,500 students in beautiful Southern Illinois. Morris Library, the primary facility, was completely renovated and reopened in 2009. The building currently features over 200 computers, laptops to borrow, 14 study rooms, and two computer classrooms. Two additional floors that will feature highly flexible, technology-rich, collaborative spaces are under construction and will open in 2014. The building houses nearly three million volumes, three and a half million microforms, and 43,000 currently-received periodicals and serials, as well as strong collections of online databases, maps, films, DVDs, and sound recordings. Morris Library is a selective U.S. Federal Depository Library and an Illinois State Depository Library. As the center for academic support services on campus, Morris Library hosts SalukiTech (technology and computer support), the University Honors Program, the Writing Center, Learning Support Services, Testing Lab, Math Lab, and Center for Teaching Excellence. Morris Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, Coalition for Networked Information, Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, and Greater Western Library Alliance. Librarians at SIU Carbondale are faculty and are covered by collective bargaining. Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Associate Dean for Information Services and responsive to input from the Dean of Library Affairs, this position leads a staff of 8-12 faculty (T/TT and NTT), up to 3 FTE support staff, several students, and several graduate student assistants in the delivery of research and information services (via a variety of formats) and in supporting learning, research, and teaching. The position is expected to demonstrate leadership in the planning and delivery of a full range of reference and instructional services. Information Services is the library’s principal information gateway and is responsible for critical activities such as providing frontline reference services, serving as liaisons between the library and all academic departments and programs, and teaching the campus population how to conduct effective library research. Serves as liaison librarian to one or more academic departments based on education and expertise. Participates in the library’s scholarly communication initiatives, including the population of the Institutional Repository. Sets goals and objectives for the unit; trains faculty and staff; monitors and evaluates faculty and staff performance. Participates in the planning, approval, preparation, and delivery of new curricula (credit and non-credit) by Library Affairs. Responsibilities include: • Overseeing the development and implementation of both new and existing reference services. • Guiding program planning and assessment for both traditional and online reference services. • Overseeing the improvement, support, and advocacy of an instructional and information literacy program as an integral component of effective reference services. • Formulating and implementing departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. • Supervising, training, mentoring, and evaluating tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track librarians, as well as reference support staff. • Organizing and supervising staff assignments (faculty, administrative/professional, civil service, graduate assistants, and undergraduate student workers) at the Information Desk. • Serving as liaison to academic departments as necessary. • Providing reports and statistical information as requested. • Participating in the library’s scholarly communication initiatives, including the population of the Institutional Repository, OpenSIUC. • Maintaining professional service contributions to Library Affairs, the University, and the profession. • Continuing to develop in librarianship and a subject specialty through research contributions, conference and/or workshop attendance, and other educational activities. • Working on special projects and other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: • ALA accredited Master’s of Library Science. • Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in reference and library instruction in an academic library. • Knowledge of emerging trends in library reference and instruction. • Progressively responsible experience leading, managing, and supervising in an academic research environment. • Experience in the selection and evaluation of library resources, including print and electronic resources. • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively. • Flexibility and ability to thrive in a complex, changing environment with competing demands. • Proven success in planning, introducing, and managing change. • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. • A minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience in an academic library. • A sustained record of peer-reviewed research and publications, as well as a record of professional service at state, regional, or national levels. Preferred Qualifications: • Second Master’s degree. • History of working with diverse populations. • Speaking, reading and writing knowledge of a second language. • Experience writing, obtaining, and managing grants.
