Job Description The Burns Librarian works with the Executive Director for Irish Programs and with the University Librarian to create a budget for acquisitions and determine priorities in specific subject areas. And, acting within those guidelines, acquires appropriate materials for the Burns Library. For purchases beyond the budget, the Burns Librarian consults with university administrators as necessary. The Burns Librarian performs all administrative duties and supervises staff in all functions for a well-established research library: hiring, evaluating performance, budgeting, expanding collections, and promoting use of the collections and services of the Burns Library. The successful candidate will lead the BC Libraries' efforts to fully integrate the holdings of the Burns Library into the research, teaching, and learning environments of the campus and beyond. As an Associate University Librarian, the candidate will serve on leading library and university committees to review functions and to set policies and priorities. The Burns Librarian functions independently for day-to-day decision-making and problem-solving The Burns Librarian makes decisions on special requests to temporarily remove materials from the library, particularly for exhibits. This is accomplished by consulting with the conservator and other staff members, the university's Risk Management Office, and others as needed. The same process is used, mutatis mutandis, to determine which outside exhibits will be accepted for display in the Burns Library. Requirements *MLS, MLIS or similar degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program *Master's degree in a relevant field *Certifications in archives administration, records management or other areas desirable. *10 years of increasingly responsible experience in library administration *At least 5 years must be in a research library *Some experience may be in general academic libraries elsewhere Preferred: *a PhD in a relevant field Closing Statement Boston College conducts background checks as part of the hiring process.
