NOTICE OF VACANCY January 31, 2014 TITLE: Director, Odegaard Undergraduate Library LOCATION: Odegaard Undergraduate Library THE LIBRARIES: Serving three campuses, the University of Washington Libraries is one of the largest and most innovative libraries in North America with collections exceeding 8 million volumes, over 500,000 electronic books, more than 120,000 currently received journal titles, as well as millions of scholarly resources in other formats. Beyond the strength of local collections and digital resources, the Libraries is recognized for its excellent service, innovative learning, and research spaces, faculty partnerships, global reach, extensive assessment efforts, and diverse award-winning staff. The Libraries plays a significant leadership role regionally as a member in the groundbreaking Orbis Cascade Alliance and throughout the profession as evidenced by the number of its staff selected for competitive leadership programs and honored by professional association lifetime achievement awards. ODEGAARD UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARY: The Odegaard Undergraduate Library is one of the largest undergraduate libraries in the country. Built on the vision of Charles Odegaard, former president of the University of Washington (1958-1973), the undergraduate library was completed in 1972 to be the primary center on campus for undergraduate learning and research. Today it is a place of strong community and collaboration for teaching, and a rich learning environment for students and faculty. The library was recently renovated to include two new active learning classrooms, innovative team spaces, and a combined writing and research center. The renovation was awarded the 2014 American Institute of Architects Institute Honor Awards for Interior Architecture. The library serves well over a million visitors every year, most of those from among the 28,000+ undergraduate students on the Seattle campus. The library is open seven days a week and operates 24/5 Sunday through Thursday. There are nine librarians and eleven classified staff in Odegaard, in addition to graduate student staff and other student support staff. THE POSITION: The Director of the Odegaard Undergraduate Library (OUGL) is responsible for leadership in carrying out the mission of OUGL and for the administration and strategic direction of its programs and services. The Director serves as the primary advocate for library programs and services affecting undergraduates and provides vision and leadership for services that support undergraduate information seeking, learning, and teaching. The Director serves on the core management team for Research and Instructional Services and reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Libraries. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Works collaboratively with others to enhance library services for students and faculty in Odegaard. Keeps abreast of the latest developments in undergraduate education, research, and technology to help drive strategic initiatives. * Leads OUGL’s collaboration with campus partners, including Learning and Scholarly Technologies, UW Technology, Classroom Technology and Events, College of Arts and Sciences (Odegaard Writing and Research Center), Housing and Food Services, and the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. * Identifies new partnership opportunities to enhance services to undergraduates. Initiates programs and services that benefit the instructional and research experiences of undergraduate students. * Assesses the programs and facilities of OUGL to ensure they are meeting the needs of undergraduate students and initiates changes as appropriate. * Provides leadership and mentorship for OUGL librarians and staff. * Responsible for ensuring excellence in OUGL access, course reserves, collection development, reference, and instructional services. * Directs policies, personnel, and budgets for OUGL. * Participates in advancement activities as appropriate. * Contributes to the discussions and planning of system-wide issues and services. * Serves as a member of the University Libraries Council and Research and Instructional Services Core Management Team. * Actively participates in Libraries-wide committee activities as appropriate. * Assumes other responsibilities as assigned and performs other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: * Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree. * Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace. * Five years of experience in position(s) of increasing responsibility within academic libraries. * Evidence of success in initiating new programs and services. * Record of effective leadership of library programs serving undergraduate students. * Record of effective supervision and mentorship of librarians and support staff. * Record of effective management of budgets and services. * Record of effective collaboration with a wide range of campus partners at various levels of the institution.   Preferred: * Experience with donor relations. SALARY: $72,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background. An Administrative Stipend will be established at the time of appointment. BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
